Im not exactly qualified, but before you throw money at the expensive fuel pump, just make sure its not something simpler.
I had issues with mine, leading to a local garage and a chap from the RAC saying it was the fuel pump. Turned out the fuel return pipes taking unused fuel back to the pump were old and knackered, letting air into the fuel system.
Not saying thats what it is, but that or something similar could be a possibility.
Had similar issues when it needed a crank sensor.

Both of those issues I mentioned are common and quite cheap to fix.

What's the mileage on the car? DTI's can be a pain to start after fuel filter change, and as said the return lines when old let in air, another one is the top seal on the injector letting in air. All of the above can make engine hard to start if car is facing up hill as the fuel drains back to the tank with the air leaks. Not uncommon to use a full battery to try and start the car which does not do the fuel pump any good.
