er, what planet are these people on? GM, Ford etc don't care about what happens in Oz and have subsidised them for years. Oz is far too small to have a viable auto manufacturing industry - IMHO of course.

Yes, 15 years ago when I lived there the unions practically ran the place and were like a throwback to the 1970's here! Things like closed shops for example were common!! 

I should think that China's transformation in the ensuing years, together with the rapid increase in the cost of living there, has meant that even union dinosaurs could see the writing on the wall for Australian manufacturing! 

They'll have to stick to what they're good at..... Digging!!!!
