Thing is when all is said and done, people expect to lose money on cars. They are a consumable, buy it, use it, throw it away.

Aaah. I don't know where to start with you on this... You couldn't be more wrong.
Only by those that can't or won't do their own repairs and maintenance. Yes they cost but by no means the level your talking.

The older the car the less you loose on it in depreciation and mark up on buying and selling. Other side of the coin is it goes wrong more often. That's where oof comes in. And my spanners.

So...
Buy and sell privately, saving of £1000 over a car dealer straight away.
Keep it ling term so save another £1000 each time you don't replace it.
Do your own maintenance and repairs at trade prices. Say 1/3 off in tc, more on used parts obviously.
No labour costs.

So the only costs are;

The car
Fuel
Parts

Minimal depreciation, but I'll break the car when I've done with it anyway, if needed.
No mark up on buying and selling.

Doesn't mean it's wrong though ::)

The Joneses aren't all they're cracked up to be... you understand that to a degree as you drive a second hand Daewoo out of choice, rather than spending £20k on a new one...

There is no right or wrong, Al, just differing points of view. But I'm not going to say anyone's an idiot for having that point of view.

More importantly, it means Esta is wrong.

Imagine the money he could have saved himself, given the time he's spent on here anyway.

...no wait, if he had an omega we'd have to let him out of gen chat. No, no no no. You keep your Daewoo Esta. ;D

No, wrong again. The correct answer is the cheapest one, and ine that does NOT end up with a Daewoo at the end of it. Where's me rubber mallet, I need to knock some sense into something.

Tunnies answer is cheapest, by some way. But he'll be late. A lot. ;D

What does it end up with then? A 12 year old piece of junk that people laugh at and car salesmen don't recognise? ;D

We all, on oof, are wrong. We should all sell our omegas and buy Daewoos for 11k, give away 5k and pay the local scouse hoodies to service it.

Yeah right.

I could be an awfull lot more frugal with my omega ownership. Sell the Irmscher stuff, drive more economically, buy cheaper t**es and save meself a few more quid. But this forum and the collective knowledge here, lpg and my spanners mean, that I don't have too do that.

A luxury, you might say. That's the only difference in opinion here.
