Engine /gearbox ECU's ?
« on: 13 December 2013, 15:36:54 »

Does it matter if a manual engine ecu is paired with an auto gearbox ecu?

As far as I know, no it does't, at least on the non DBW, seem to remember its the Loom that tells the Engine ECU wether its a Manual or Saloon, probably the same for DBW's but you never know.

Yep, non-dbw will figure out if it's an auto as long as the ignition retard line is connected to the gearbox ECU. I have a feeling DBW ECUs need programming.

The engine ecu from an auto dbw will put an error message on the MID/GID if fitted to a manual car. Car otherwise behaves normally...

Not tried the other way round though :-\ Gearbox has its own ecu does it not :-\

Engine ECU has no connection to the MID, so guessing that was down to the MID being configured for an auto box. Engine and Atuo box ECU need to communicate via CAN on DBW cars, and I think this requires config in the engine ECU, otherwise both ECUs raise fault codes (but might drive ok).

for non DBW cars, the ecu's are the same, but the wiring loom is different.

if the auto ecu is left in place, then the instrument pack will display "auto transmission", which I sometimes leave in place just to remind me that it once had an auto.

DBW requires programming from a Tech2
