mv6 with many problems
« on: 19 December 2013, 20:25:40 »

hello all
ive just bought an old 97 3.0 mv6 and I think its gonna be a lemon  :-*

first up its always saying "coolant level" on the display but it has loads in it (needs changing though as its pure brown)

splutter turning left when fuel low (assuming its lower than it says)

wet boot (and noticed a small patch of rust either side under screen (is this a common issue/fix)

climate control only blows ambient air and cant demist the windows (it blows cold but not ac cold no matter what)

clutch slips quite badly when given the beans (is this a major jon on these or can I attempt it (first rwd car)

radio says  " 7 safe " on the display cant seem to enter the code its a ccr600

oh and the exhaust has developed a major blow due to a pipe detaching from a box lol sounds epicly loud

so its got its issues! any help muchly appreciated

That sounds sick :'( :'(

Could be your oil cooler knackered .
Coolant sensor knackered or just the float stuck .
Spluttering turning left ?
Wet boot , check the rear vents not blocked in boot cubby holes . Maybe the boot rubber seal also split .
Air con needs re gas or new seals as its leaked all its coolant .
Clutch , prob needs a new one .
Radio , you need to leave the radio on for a long run then it will let you enter the code .
New exhaust .

Not much  ;D ::)

Welcome to the forum mate :)

Don't despair, it's not great but nothing that can't be resolved. There are plenty of people on here who will give help and guidance if you need it. Have a look through the maintenance guide, it's well laid out, so have a look round there.

Keep an eye out in the meets section to see if any are happening local to you, pop down and put faces to names. It's well worth it :y

the spluttering only happened after the low fuel light was on for a mile or 2 it was fine before... see how it goes tomorrow I guess
it did have a slight flat spot low in the revs

oil looked fine (quite good actually) the coolant looks rough gonna flush that and have a look at the heater bypass ive been reading about

exhaust I can fix (the box looks newish its just the pipe has separated (crap weld)

my main concerns are the climate control (as its basically gonna be undrivable with the mist) and the clutch (bits don't seem to pricey but may need a guide on it)

Brown coolant usually a sign of oil contamination of coolant - as said above classic symptom of oil cooler failure.  Sensible not to drive car until replacement oil cooler fitted ;)

HBV fault usually results in coolant loss ;)  Coolant warning - probably sensor stuck/knackered if level ok.

Other faults - as others have said above ;)

could just be dirty having not been changed or anti-freezed for years. dont assume its oil cooler. ;)
if its got big lumps of oil in it then well yes, would be like choc ice cream.

Had two oil coolers go, both on mfl Elites, both had brown coolant, no "lumps" of oil, but a tad "frothy". ;)

Get the A/C checked for leaks and then re-filled and leave it on all the time.

it just looks rusty tbh doesn't have any oily sheen ?

the hbv I was wondering if it was the cause of no heat (the name bypass valve being the clue) I wondered if it stopped hot water ?
if not then I guess the search continues... im going to check the pipes tomorrow see whats hot.

I connected my op com to it (in hope of having option for the radio) but the climate control times out when trying to read any codes / tests

when I drain the coolant ill have a prod around for the level sensor couldn't see it on the outside (ala most other Vauxhalls)

poke your finger through the filler hole in header tank, its there. chances are if the coolant is that dirty then the matrix could be blocked. needs a good flush.  :)

Bit concerned about the rough running if the fuel light had only just come on.

For the heating issues, check over the vac system first - there is a guide/layout diagram of the vac system in Maintenence Guides :y

Forgot, the coolant warning is a duff switch on the coolant bottle, quite common. Easiest fix is to replace bottle, about £30 (trade) from dealer.

Level sensor float is a golf ball sized lump straight down from the cap :y check also that the plug underneath is plugged in securely...

Clutch is only 23 bolts from daylight, but not really a driveway job unless you are 1) Clinically curious, 2) can get the car securely supported 18" off the ground and 3) know someone daft enough to help... on paper it's a 2-3 hour job :-\

I agree with Al, clutch not a difficult job but you MUST get the car 100% secure off the ground, cheap halfords stands won't suffice and you need a workshop quality jack not £30 2 tonne rubbish

I've done a few and now have it down to 4 hours if needsbd but I much prefer to take a leisurely day

Fuel filter , when was this last changed? The chugging on low fuel could be something that simple

Have a few days off in January if you want a pair of hands and some decent tools :y
