My heating fan isn't running. Normally it kicks in a minute or so after starting. I went out on friday and after about 10 - 15 mins it kicked in and ran as normal, this included parking and restarting. However this morning it wouldn't run again. The only event that has happened, is that it has been in to have the self levelling shocks replaced (see seperate post) on top of the aggro that job has caused, the fan not working is the final straw. Is there any link between these things. An old E class merc estate is looking like a good alternative just now

Does it share a common fuse with the self leveling system

Fuse 27 for sl and rear 12v socket.

Any evidence of water in the passenger footwells

Yea the blower didn't work before I took the fuse. I'll check water level it doesn't seem damp. This the drain on nearside where the cabin air filter lives.  If the sampler jobbie in the cabin is dusty will that affect it.

If the pollen filter is damp then the 'hedgehog' resistor is a likely candidate. If it's dry then the control panel might be on its last legs

It seems that the fan is tight when trying to turn by hand  so as suggested earlier has cooked the resistor (hedegehog) . So I guess I need one, and fan motor. The car is a 53 plate 2.6 Elite estate.  Thanks martinH

From the pollen filter side, ignition off, using a nozzle/tube, spray some plusgas onto the fan shaft. Leave to soak for a bit, the switch the fan on max, if it spins up more freely, then switch off and apply some 3in1 to the shaft. Repeat until is spins up freely...

Once it's freed up, try the other fan speed settings, if any of them don't work then you need a new resistor

It's Christmas day tomorrow, and so working on cars would be a 'no no' with the memsahib, but I hold the trump card, IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!. So as it promises to be sunny at  it's not a day to be wasted. Especially based on the ball park quote from the garage for new bits.

Spraying Plusgas. Aside from taking the (damp) pollen filter out, is there anything that comes off to gain access. I can barely see the fan never mind accurately spray Plusgas or get a hand in there. I used a plastic tube off a rust proofing spray and randomly squirted. I can only reach the fan with a piece of bamboo it is very tight. On top of the the self levelling  system not working (see separate post) this car is rapidly approaching the lumpy hammer.

Might be easier to remove the fan, but not a job I have done, so can't comment

Nope. Either try through the scuttle drain or blower motor needs to be removed (3 screws) to access fan

The three screws are they inside the car, as in
 pass. footwell. Or outside in the cold, along with the three wise men
