Is ethernet cable all the same. Need to run one about 25m connect it to my ps3 and using a splitter to my laptop. Before you ask Wifi is crap so having to wire it.

Splitter? What sort of splitter? Are you talking about a switch/hub? You can't just tee-in.

CAT5E is the minimum you want, and over that distance should be fine for up to 1Gbps (no idea what the gayStation can do). Obviously, its only as fast as the slowest component, although the cables need to exceed the other components to prevent errors.

CAT5e standard is good for 100 metres. We usually limit the length of the fixed wiring to 90m to allow a maximum of 5m patch lead each end.

The fixed wiring is solid cored and quite a lot cheaper than the flex used for patch leads (but I have seen 25m long patch leads for sale)

Mine work fine, although I only use them for sky box and PC upstairs. No gaming or owt like that.

25m is a fair run as an extension, personally I wouldn't use a patch lead that length, if you can get one?, run some Cat5e Cable and terminate with some Cat5e RJ45 Sockets each end. The Cable at that length need to be 'Balanced' and  proper RJ45 sockets have Balun's in them to allow this to happen.

Might have some left over Cat5e Cable (LSF the Purple stuff) kicking around somewhere, let me know and I'll have a look.

What's the difference between 25m of Cat5 with a plug at each end, and 25m of Cat5 that has a socket on each end?

If anything, you stand a greater chance of losses with the latter solution as that will have more interconnects along the way.
