Lower ball joint ?
« on: 29 December 2013, 10:35:59 »

my 2.6 has started making a slight knocking noise from the off side front wheel on bumpy surfaces  .

Over speed bumps it does not do it .like when drop links are worn

Jacked up front &  had a wiggle around.   Holding wheel at 12 & 6 o'clock there is no movement at all

but holding a 9 & 3 o'clock there is a bit of play .  It looks like the bottom joint has play in it .

Wishbones were replaced 3 years ago by Vx dealer , so presume genuine as cost was huge on the reciept.

Nearside is fine  as are all other wishbone bushes etc.

My enquiry is :

1.   would this play cause a mild knocking on bumps /manhole covers etc ?

2.   VXworld do Lemforder bottom joints for £17  presume it will be ok just to change that joint   (drill out riveted one etc.

TIA     Al :y

Why don't you think it is the drop link?

I'd expect to be able to feel some movement at the bottom ball joint by holding the wheel top & bottom if the bottom ball joint was worn.

You say you can feel play at 9 o'clock & 3 o'clock .... you sure it's not a steering joint that's gone  ??? ie track rod end  ???

been out & had another good look

Can only see movement/play in that bottom joint , no where else . :-\

Also as said no play on wheel on the N/S & n/s bottom joint is not moving/showing play like the o/s one is .

the knocking noise  is hard to describe , whith drop links it is a definate clonk IMO, having changed these before on other omegas.

Also the drop links were changed along with the wishbones 3 years ago . (Did not mention that in OP)

This is more of rattle/light knocking  on rough/bumpy road surfaces from that o/s wheel area

Certainly looks like the lower joint is worn though . . .but for the cost of drop links I may as well put a pair of them on as well ;)
