urgent help required
« on: 30 December 2013, 14:29:45 »

I am in the middle of removing the alternator however the two bolts holding it in place do not appear to be coming out but just spinning in their place. Are they really long bolts or could something be broken?

One looks like its a 17mm nut on a bit of stud

Not going well

You need to get a wrench on the back as there are nuts. IIRC it's 11mm nut and 17mm at the front  :)

IIRC, there is a nut on the back of the bolt, so you'd need a spanner on this

Did tis yesterday SMD,

Done from the top.

The bolt in mine were orientated different directions but as mentioned you need to get a spanner or wrench on either side.

I took the bag-pipes etc out and the airfilter housing for more space (big help).

Aux belt off and then tensioner.

Extracted the alternator mounting bolts and tapped off.

Disconnected the 2 wires then replace...

I used loads of sockets, rings, and trorx. (more than I would have thought necessary... With out a reasonable set of kit you could struggle...

I hope this is some help.

14mm, 10mm, 8mm and an E14 should do it

Yeah I was lucky that I managed to find an 11 in an old set bought from Tesco iirc!  ::)

I haven't looked at the guide but if I was to ever do it again I would remove bagpipes, remove the aux belt tensioner, cable tray etc etc I had loads of access doing it this way!

I'm thinking that you could sneak around it but my own personal way of doing this would be to remove whatever's in the way.... HOWEVER, I do have a lot of experience in removing everything top end ::) This may not be the easiest way for you though  :y

I definately found use for 11 and 15 (i think) as well Rob.

I'm in full agreement Webby, that getting the "stuff" out of the way is the way to go.

Sorry M Kerr... I must type faster  ;D

Yeah I was fortunate enough to have airbox and coolant bottle out of the way too.... for the sake of 10 mins removing those things you get so much room!

Only other thing I'd add SMD...... make sure you route the knock sensor wire correctly; you don't want that getting caught up in the aux belt/tensioner assembly.  :y

You must have had me on CCTV Webby,  while grappling with everything else... I had to go back a couple of steps to reroute the knock sensor wire (duh)...

It didn't work out for me today, I won't be removing anything without the 11mm spanner it seems so its off to Halfords to buy one. I'm quite disappointed with the 150pc set. Almost everytime I set out on a job, I need to go and buy something that isn't in the kit!

Whats the 15mm for M Kerr? Spanner or socket? Whats the E14 for Rob?
