SMS Warning Light staying illuminated on dash
« on: 02 January 2014, 16:35:02 »

Hello chaps.
As a new boy I wondered if there was anyone out there in the North Eastern region who
could help reset my ECU, for a small consideration I am assuming that the airbag sensor has failed but am told that replacement will not extinguish light. I'll need the device resetting for that which means the hardware, a laptop and the expertise, non of which I possess.

Do you have an Android powered smartphone?

If so, download Torque Pro and get yourself a Bluetooth adaptor (ELM 327 or equivalent) and you can reset the ECU yourself.

PS

The above only applies if your car is registered from March 2000 onwards, if it's older than that then I suspect you would need a proper Tech 2.

Hello Andy
Many thanks for that info. Unfortunately I don't possess an android smart phone but my lady has the latest swanky i-pad. Could we download the app. and use this instead. Presumably we would need the bluetooth connector with the USB. My model is a 2.2 sport of 2004 vintage. I understand that the port is situated under the scuttle/glove box  on the passenger side. Would the pin plug fit the socket? Wait a minute!! dont need cables with bluetooth! Sorry I'm a bit primitive. Is this like a wireless connection and thats why you need android technology?

Best regards,
Omegauser

Diagnostic socket is in the fuse/relay box under the steering column  ;)

Unfortunately not, it is only available on the Android platform.

I do believe Apple have something similar called "Engine Link", although I have never used that so I can't confirm what exactly it will let you do.

If you decide to go the root suggested, ensure you get "Torque Pro" as Andy suggests .. I can't say if it will do SMS systems as I don't use it .. but I DO know that "Torque Lite" .. the freebie version ...won't ...  :)

I actually thought that ELM327 systems only "talked" to engine ECU's .. but I'm happy to be proved wrong ...

Torque Pro won't talk to the ABS ECU.
Scan My Opel says it will but I have yet to get it to connect.

Doh

I forgot the SRS light comes from the ABS ECU, for some reason I had it in my head it came from the engine ECU.

@ omegauser,

Sorry bud, you'll need someone with Tech 2 as Torque Pro will only do engine ECU's.

I have both the Torque Pro app and also "My Naff Code Reader" which will both extinguish the airbag warning light...

"My Naff Code Reader" is only used on a LapTop and as already said the Torque app is only available for the Android smartphones, there is however an app avalable for iPhones and works through a wireless dongle not bluetooth as the Torque app uses...

If you was within a couple of miles of me in Wigan, Id be happy to plug you in and clear the codes for you :)

Hello Minifreek and Others
Thank you for your kind offer to plug me in (so to speak) But appears from our friends that we need to be locating the ABS ECU. Now, chaps, is that in the fuse/relay box under the steering column too?
While we're on can anyone recomend a good workshop manual with good readable electrical info. (unlike Haynes - dont want to strip my beautiful engine thank you very much!)
Regards

Airbag warning light is linked to the airbag ecu. Nothing to do with abs. The one socket handles diagnosis on all installed systems. Most on pin 7 some on pin 12 (in the case of the omega)
