Omega will be off the road for a while so should i take battery off  :-\ Only trouble with that is wont be able to start it , but i heard starting the car up just to warm it up can do more harm than good  ??? So will omega be ok just left standing outside .. maybe put it up on stands and take wheels off  :-\

This will be long term storage so going to cover with a tarp , maybe in ten years time omega will be resurrected  ??? Probably take plugs out and fill cylinders with oil  ???

You can get arguments for and against starting it up to warm through.I think if you raise it onto axle stands or similar to take the weight off the tyres then there's no need to actually remove the wheels[I stand to be corrected on this]But whatever you do do not cover it with a tarp!!A proper car cover then fine but never ever a tarp, unless of course you want to repaint the car when you uncover it again!

Point taken Baza  ;) I'll look out for a proper cover . At least while its raised off the ground a few jobs can be done underneath ie wax oiled ect  :)

Indeed it can. Leave it alone until you intend to drive it again. Engines don't forget how to run and don't feel the cold. ;)

I thought as much Kevin , although i use to start my older cars capri that sat for 2 years in the garage but the battery needed charging a lot without a run . Not much else to do then apart from taking the battery off and sling a cover over it  :)

I believe... left not turnoed over for a VERY long time the rings can partially "weld to the cylenders", hence the oiling.  I think though that just a general spray with 3 in 1 is the job.  All you're trying to protect are the rings.  I'd put the plugs back in and close the bores from ambient moisture.

could all be rubbish of course... :P

The bores will be oiled as normal. Provided the engine is shut down once properly hot, there will be zero moisture in the bore.

Old wives tail it seems to me.

I hope so. My Fireblade has been in the garage untouched for, must be 3 years now. Engine shut off after a track day, removed battery, left in garage. I guess time will tell. ;D

How come the Omega's being put to sleep, Steve?

Its gone into early retirement  ;D Preserved to be reborn in ten yrs or so .. meanwhile the minor jobs that need doing will be done while its up on the stands  ;)

So oil in plug wells or not  ???

If left standing for an extended length the engine can get internal corrosion of the cylinders, as any oil on the surface will gradually drop under gravity, and the cylinders are open to atmosphere via the valves.. it is impossible for all the valves to be closed at the same time !!

When I had the MGB off the road for 3 years the plugs were only in finger tight and every 2 months I put a tablespoon of light oil (3-in-0ne) into each cylinder then turned the engine over  2-3 times using a ratchet spanner to "spread" the oil - easy enough with all the plugs out - then reinserted the plugs finger tight. When the bodywork was complete and the engine was stripped there was no sign of any corrosion at all. As a bonus removing the coke/crud from piston tops and valves was very easy as well as it was well soaked after 3 years !
