Driving in London ???
« on: 06 January 2014, 19:43:15 »

I wonder how long it will be before the bad habits return ... just seems to show how poor the driving standards of the UK really are .. :(

This just proves how difficult it is for both motorists and cyclists on the very busy ancient sized roads of London.

Many a time I have either almost collided with a cyclist, or seen others do it.  Field of vision is always greatly restricted and you find cyclists, who can actually travel much faster, coming up your sides, across the back, and suddenly across the line of your travel.  So often they are In a blind spot and then suddenly appear, giving you a fright even when you believe you have everything in your vision.

We won't go into cyclists, or motorist jumping lights, motor bikes cutting you up, etc, etc, as this has all been covered before.  No, it is all about old roads, severe traffic congestion, and human frailties of not having 360 degree vision, coupled with a human brain, mixing with all forms of transport.  Cyclists need their own road space, but in London forget it!!  No-one will be willing to pay for what is really necessary. :) :)

I wish that such action was performed nationwide on a random basis, things would be so much different for all road users and no doubt things would be much better for everyone :y

This is a problem with a lack of traffic police, speed cameras, don't catch bad driving. It is good to see the cyclist red light jumpers, those without lights and those riding on the pavement getting caught and issued fixed penalties as their selfish actions create dangerous situations for themselves, pedestrians and other road users, bringing all cyclists into disrepute, as we all too often see with comments on here.

Yeah, 4000 fines to cyclists.. maybe there'd be a few less of you getting in the way :P ;)

I jest, of course.. most cyclists are exactly the same as me - just trying to get from A to B without getting wiped out by something larger.

Although on Rods point about pavements & lights - I saw a fella almost get taken out the other day as he rode down the pavement on his black bike, all dressed in black, in the dark. He arrived at a junction at almost exactly the same time as the car in front of the car in front of me turned into said junction without indicating - the cyclist clearly had no intention of stopping at the dropped kerb to see if it was clear (personally as a pedestrian I'll always triple check the car coming isn't about to turn in without warning, but maybe that's just me) and locked his wheels up and slid to a halt.

Hard to apportion blame though when they were both acting like idiots - no indication from the car and a stealth ninja cyclist that the doddery old fool in the car problably didn't even see. ::)

Mind I've seen the same stealth ninja cyclist (as I shall now call him) before riding on the road in the same manner - I can only conclude he has a death wish..

Stealth Ninja Cyclist Part 2 :- He's still about!  :o  ;D

Driving along a residential A road last night after dark at 30mph, a cyclist shot out of a side road in front of me, crossing the road to another side road on the other side. Dark bike, dark clothing, no lights!  ::)

Back to London though and they're talking about raising the congestion charge.

Well, I'd recommend the stage production of War Horse. But its a close run thing of quality v agro. But I'd definitely recommend not going in a howling force 50 and 2 metres of rain a minute. :(
