Can anyone comprehend a temperature such as this? It is predicted that this will be the low in a place called Fargo in the US.
I was trying to think of what would happen if this occurred here. All the water based fluids in you car would freeze solid, even neat windscreen wash. Apparently, it will freeze skin in two minutes.
I was thinking....could a single pane of 4mm glass withstand the temperature differential of minus 61 outside and, say, plus 65 degrees inside your house?
I'm sure you can all think of more......

Seen a clip on the news earlier but they said it was ( only) minus 35. That's bad enough but minus -61...jeez!!
Think the coldest I've ever endured was minus 18 and that was almost unbearable .
Wonder if when it gets to a certain temp, say minus 30 for instance if it makes any difference regardless of how much colder it gets?

According to programmes I've watched about the poles, yes, especially to infrastructure. Metal snaps much more easily at very low temperatures. And tyres....at minus 61... Should imagine it would affect them.

The -61 is the equivalent temperature including windchill. Your windows don't suffer from windchill, only soft/moist surfaces like skin do !!

But still bloody cold even without the windchill factor !!

Coldest I've personally experienced was -32C in Thule, luckily the aircraft was in a heated hanger (heated to -5C to preserve the permafrost) and a vehicle to get from accommodation to hanger ..the only time I was actually outside was a 2 minute check after we had been towed out of the hanger just prior to engine start ('twas my job to check the towing bridle for correct disconnection and remove one safety pin from the nose undercarriage) .. that 2 minutes was extended by the 5 minutes before and after getting rather a lot of very serious clothing on !!  I would not have believed just how cold my cheeks and forehead got in those two minutes ...

-61F but that is -51C .. so I guess they mean with wind chill ...

Coldest I've known in my wife's village in -33degC two years ago, normally the coldest is around -25degC. At the moment they have gone from very warm between a min of -2degC to a max of +2degC to an unusually hot +7degC today. Normal average for this time of year is about -7degC.

Snow grips no good in those temperatures, it is more like driving in sand than UK snow/ice ... the snow/ice is so cold it has no "wet" surface, and it is the wetness that makes ice slippery.

Just watched an un identifiable reporter, on itv news, wrapped up in multi layers of clothing and head gear, throw a cup of "boiling" water in the air.

It froze before it hit the ground.

Oldish trick ... as you throw the water upwards it forms small droplets, each of which has very little latent heat .. so freezes very quickly .. if he had poured it out it would not have frozen anywhere near as fast ...

It was -25 in Finland when we went to see Santa a few years ago, didn't feel any colder than a normal -5 winters day here, mind you my camera battery died within 60 seconds then magically went back to full charge when I went back indoors
