Hissing from expansion tank lid
« on: 12 January 2014, 19:46:01 »

Hi peeps was doing a throttle body clean when i notice a hissing sound coming from expansion tank lid.System was up to temp pressure , should it do this.Had coolant warning on dash a couple of days before, stopped let cool down and refilled.Could it be hairline crack in bottle near lid.

Change cap and then see if it stops hissing,if it doesnt change coolant tank.

The tanks tend to crack around the base of the neck :y

Check carefully though, as there are some moulding lines around it, so cracks might not be immediately obvious...
Don't rule out the cap just because it's relatively new... especially if it's a pattern one... some suppliers are less than fussy when it comes to quality :-\

It will allow the coolant to boil at a lower temperature, which if left unchecked might cause temperature issues :-\

At the very least, the coolant level will keep dropping over time as the hot coolant escapes as steam. For the sake of £45 for a tank and cap from Vauxhall, a splash of coolant and five minutes it's not worth dithering over :y
