The regs state a minimum pressure drop at the boiler and modern boilers, although more efficient, tend to consume more instantaneous gas with combis being worse.

Hence the need on most cases for 22mm pipe

The gas supply to your boiler must be close to its supply, ie short gas run, if it where a long run in 15mm then the boiler would be under gassed, if you also have a gas cooker and fire up 3 rings at the same time and it's not in 22mm pipe work, the boiler has biggest demand, will either badly under perform or simply die. Bigger is better mate and modern condensers use forced draught burners and gas valves which use atmospheric. zero govenors  to regulate gas pressure :y
