Omaga 2.5 TD problems
« on: 18 January 2014, 11:22:16 »

Just been to the garage that has the Omega and been informed there is no compression on 2 & 4 cylinders, from reading other posts it would seem this is head gasket problem, although they have reported no gassing or pressurisation of the coolant in the header tank.
This engine has done 140k so is it worth trying to repair or should I try for a known good engine?

The amount I would have to spend on removing the head etc etc would probably be the same as getting a known good secondhand engine I would imagine.

I don't want to get rid but that may be the only other option, any thoughts on this guys?

Hmm,
didnt you recently report it had overheated?if no then it could just be valve clearances closed up?
or maybe the injector not opening both wll give similar low compresion readings
unusual for a head gasket to go on these unless its been cooked,hg is pretty easy to do havng said that, but does require a special tool to lock the timing chain back and enter the pin to lock it all up
(PM THE BOY I MADE one from his electric door opener it may have survived the explosion) ;D

Hello Graham!
The problem is the young lad had been using it, with the known fault of the coolant transfer pipe leaking, trying to pin him down to a straight answer is nigh on impossible.
Personally I have never overheated it, but it may have happened, I just don't know.

I have had an offer of an engine (complete) including delivery and 90 day warranty for £325!
I can also get one for £100 with no warranty plus pallet to Scotland for around £60 but I'm not sure of the guy. That second one is from a chap on Totalcarlton that has been the subject of quite a few posts, not altogether the best recommendations either.

I think I'll have to bite the bullet on this one, get a new clutch fitted and the new water pump I bought last year as well.

I have to bear in mind the lack of facilities over here in Scotland, plus I don't have a lot of time over here to do this myself........ Still it means I will have an engine to strip down for spares if needed, maybe even sell in parts to recoup the outlay!

Your thought mate?

Just for your info I went for a complete Vauxhall unit that had a 90 day warranty backed by a UK wide company, easier for the mechanics, easier on my wallet in the end.
It was the fact it was a complete omega unit plus the safety net of the warranty that swung it for me even though that BMW unit did appear to be a good buy.
