Heater Matrix
« on: 23 January 2014, 13:40:57 »

I think I've got a leak in my heater matrix as there is a slight smell of coolant when the blowers are on, although the carpet is dry.  :-\

I've read the guide on how to replace it but I'm wondering if anyone has tried pumping a strong radweld solution through it to stop up the leaks?  I was thinking along the lines of flushing the matrix, then throw a bottle of redweld or similar in a bucket and then pump it through the matrix.  :-\  The only downside that I can think of is creating enough pressure to get the radweld in the leaks.  :-\

Before anyone jumps on me, I'm NOT proposing putting radweld in the cooling system, just the heater matrix!  ;)

Carpets dry  :-\
I'd be checking under the bonnet first around the HBV  ;)

If its a V6, its also possible the oil cooler plate leaking and the coolant is evaporating off the block with the heat of the engine.

Remember you are sucking the air into the car from underneath the bonnet  :)

Radweld won`t just stay in the matrix due to it being part of the cooling/heating system ::)

I know that!  :P I was thinking of disconnecting the matrix and pumping radweld directly through it.  ;)

New HBV!  :)

Oil cooler plate is possible so good point.  :y  At 215300 odd miles I'm considering changing the oil cooler before it gives up the ghost anyway, so that might be a good place to start.  :-\

If you need some practice, get your arse up here and practice on mine  :y
I've been mopping white sludge out of mine with a old sock for the last month  ::)
Problem is, the sealant needs a good 24 hours to dry and I need it for hospital runs at the moment so can't take it off the road  :(

Easy solution - replace it mate - they're not expensive - just need to practice you keyhole surgery techniques ;)

Hmm trouble is Mr Gonads has put doubts in my mind that it is the matrix now.  :-\  I don't want to go changing parts for the sake of it.  ::)

How about bypassing the matrix to see if the coolant smell goes.  :-\

Might be a idea  ;)
If you remove the scuttle and plenum, it will give you a chance to look at the pipes back there too  :y
Also, if you have a spare coolant bottle cap, pop down the cycle shop or a tyre fitting place and scrounge an old shroader valve.
Drill a small hole in the top of the cap, pull it half way through and glue / seal it.
Then screw the new cap onto the expansion bottle and pressurise it a little with a bike / foot pump.
You will then see were the leak is  :y :y :y
