Breakdown / Recovery services ........
« on: 17 February 2014, 10:14:51 »

Hi,

Apart from AA / RAC / Green Flag, are there any other national breakdown / recovery services?

Does anyone have any views on which of these offer the best value / service?

Thanks - Rob

I've used Rescuemycar for the last few years and the premiums are very cheap, however if you need to use them they charge a £40 excess so it's a gamble really.  ::)  The first thing that they want to know, is your card number when you call!!  :D

In the last 4 years that I've used them, I've called them out twice so overall a massive saving over the traditional services.  :y  When I did call them out the service was quick and efficient, had someone with me within the hour and they got me home with no arguments or quibbles. :y

You can also pay a bit extra to waive the excess and the premium will still be cheaper than the AA, RAC or Green Flag which I might do next time now I'm driving the Omega again...  ::)  ;)

You're not gonna break down driving an omega, Rob. I wouldn't bother.

Under-steer is when the front of the car hits the wall, and over-steer is when the rear of the car hits the wall.
Power is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how much of the wall you take with you.

Does this rescuemycar do the person like the AA and not have the service registered to one vehicle only?

Either Keith, I have 'personal cover' at the moment for which the premium was £38.90, but if you register it to one vehicle I believe the premium is about half, depending on your car I guess.  :-\

Don't forget the £40 excess though!  If you 'plan' to use the service then it's probably cheaper to use one of the others.  ;)

I use Autonational Rescue (no, not Thunderbirds), so far havn,t had to use them so can,t say how they perform.
Or you could upgrade your bank account and get it cheap that way, if they still do that. :-\

Yep. Wifey gets free RAC with her bank account from barclays, just roadside repair/ recovery, nothing fancy. No good to me though, so I have to buy separately.

As I always say when this topic comes up, you need to read the small print before you break down!

Especially the cheaper options with companies that you've never heard of. They have LOTS of exclusion clauses, which make them much less of a bargain than you think. For instance, if you decline a repair(perhaps you have the necessary spare part at home), then they will decline to pay for the recovery and the initial callout. Many of them only allow one recovery per fault, so if you have the car recovered home at 03:00, getting it to your garage isn't covered. Finally be vary wary of the extras on insurance/bank accounts, as most of them are just the basic callout and local recovery, which is 10 to 15 miles and is of little help when you're 100 miles from home.

I could go on, but it will turn into a rant, and will help no-one.

Have used it a few times, and cannot praise the service highly enough :y
