Hello everyone,quick question please.

I have a whinning noise on the move....i jacked the car up at the rear and when i spin both rear wheels by hand,both of them grumble,like the bearing has gone...however i wondered, the fact that the noise has just started in the last couple of weeks, and both wheels are making the same noise,could it be the diff? either knackered or dry?

Could be either, wheel bearings issues on Estates can be common, having said not that difficult to check the Diff Oil level.

Is it still jacked up, if so try a screwdriver against the ear with someone else turning the wheels and see if you can hear anything at various points from diff to wheels.

Thanks mate, its back on its feet now,but i will try that.
I only wondered about the diff as it just started doing it,and i thought it might be unlikely that both bearings would suddenly start being noisy at the same time

Worth dropping the driveshafts off the back of each hub so you can isolate the wheel bearings and re-check?

You wouldn't even need to remove it from the diff just to prove the wheel bearings are OK.

 A single wheel bearing will go quiet when you go round a corner of the side the noisy one is on as the load comes off it, if that helps. they can transmit the noise through the car some way so you are not sure which it is
