Y188NFA 2.2 petrol manual saloon
I am replacing cheap crank sensor (£30) with genuine Vx(£100). PhilRich said it could be done without removing Engine mounting. I have done so up to the point where I have to replace the retaining screw. I find it difficult to align the hole in the sensor with the thread in the block, then insert the screw and engage the thread. Has anyone any suggestions?

Could try a nail to line the holes up,and just take your time,if its being a sod go for a bacon roll break and a cuppa and try again,it will go.
Or just use the force lol  ;D

I found a 1/4" universal joint with an 8mm? socket & extension bar helped enormously and as said, 'use the Force' young Padawan ;D ;)

Having changed the sensor last week I appreciated that most of the operations I had done from above anyway. The only tricky operations were undoing the retaining bolt (did it with 8mm socket and wobbly bars) and replacing retaining bolt. Replacing it defeated me. I could not align the hole in the sensor and the thread well enough to allow the thread to marry when I inserted it through the sensor hole and turned it.
In the end I removed the engine mounting. Then I could align the hole withe the thread with An Allen key, then holding the bolt in an 8mm socket with Bluetak managed to screw the bolt into the thread, working beneath the car.
Thanks for your challenge. I expect I shall try it again.
I found the way to get the cable connector through the narrow gap is to go through horizontally, i.e. take the connector end to the front of the car (I removed the auxiliary belt) and pull it through with string attached in a straight line at the height of the sensor location. Then it does not snag on the corner of the cambelt cover.
