Heater and Electric Problems
« on: 01 March 2014, 22:02:20 »

Hi All, I'm Very new to this. I've recently purchased my 2nd Vauxhall, this being an '98 Omega 2.5 V6 but recently the heating and now dash have stopped working. The three way valve has recently been replaced and the Vacuum pipes seem to be o.k. I've changed the auxilery water pump but when the engine is running no water comes out of them (even when disconnected!) I have also flushed the Matrix with a hose pipe and only got clear water which makes me believe that it could be an electrical problem behind the dash, especially as the dash has now stopped working! She runs up to temperature perfectly and doesn't over heat. Can any please help?

Steve :)

Can you explain in more detail about "dash not working" .  What was working & is not  working now ?

Also what model/spec  2.5 V6    :-\

Hi there, Thanks for replying, The ignition lights come on but when you start they go out as normal but the Rev counter, fuel gauge, temp. gauge, radio and digital display are not working, I also noticed today the lights aren't flashing when I lock the car and the interior lights are really dim. Any ideas because I'm out!!

Check battery/alternator voltage using a decent voltmeter and Kevin's guide

Also check battery connections for looseness/corrosion/ getting warm

Forgot to say Spec Vauxhall Omega CD V6, 4 door saloon. It has the heater controls on both sides and AC. Hope this helps!

O.K. I got the dash all working. Should have checked the fuses myself instead of listening to the garage!! Now back to the main problem of no heaters. I am still only getting cold air. I think there could be a problem with the vacuum system by the three way valve (which has been replaced) is there any way of by passing this to allow water to run through the heater matrix?

Take the vacuum pipe off the top of the HBV (heater bypass valve - what you've called a three way valve) and block the end of the flexible pipe with a screw - purely to avoid a vac leak .. this leaves the HBV open to atmosphere, no vac = max heat .. so it may well start to work for you....

Couldn't wait! just removed the top pipe and inserted a screw to block pipe (by torch light), brought the car up to temperature but unfortunately still no heat. The pipes to the Matrix are still cold as well. If there are any other suggestions they will be gratefully received  :)

mmm .. if the pipes to the HBV are hot, but the pipes from it to the matrix are cold, then only two possibilities that I can see .... 1) HBV is stuck closed - but you say its new(ish) 2) matrix is blocked, in which case it might be worth disconnecting the pipes and trying a hosepipe through the matrix in both directions to flush it through ... The matrix pipeways are tiny however, so you might only flush the main waterways .. but even that should make some difference .....

Have already flushed Matrix with hose. Will definitely wait till weekend now but will check all air lines and maybe pull and replace the HBV. The dam thing was only replaced in October! Will report back with my findings

Or..
The valve has been fitted with the heater matrix connected to the normally closed port on the valve :-\

Can you actually connect the HBV up wrongly ??? It's a while since I've done one .. but from memory the pipes only lined up one way ??

Thanks for this, Going to check pipes as well now. I didn't fit the HBV but the garage I use dismiss this as a problem as it was recently changed (by some one else) so I think it maybe time to find another garage! I'm not used to these engines. Rover P6 and my Series 3 Land Rover's are much easier!!
