Hi guys,

After fitting my new exhaust (cat back) when decelerating I get what feels like the exhaust tapping the bottom of the car. I've read a bit and found out that this is back pressure and in other words a ''back fire''.

Bearing in mind I've only just fitted it is this caused by a slight exhaust leak at the cat to centre silencer join? That's where it feels like it is. I didn't have any exhaust paste so I fitted it dry and it all runs really nice and quiet except a very slight leak on start up. I assume once it heats up it expands and stops the leak cos if I stand outside the car with it running when its warm theres no sound of a leak at all.

I use Loctite 5920 high temperature silicone sealant to join down pipe to central section. Halfords sell it, a tube is about £6, and it will do about 12 seals.Vx do not do a gasket for it.

Did you clean the joints before fitting

A good wire brush and a smear of assembly paste should be all that's required

I gave them a bit of a brush up with the wire brush but i didnt go overboard. I'll undo them all, wire brush and apply a bit of paste

Arguably a good quality new exhaust shouldn't need paste, but second hand a smear is well advised
