In a nutshell, due to the wreckless spending of the previous government. Although there was still a huge debt before that.

The solution is to massively cut government spending, which is going to cause pain to many.

In fairness to this coalition, they have managed to curb the amount of overspend, but it was so large, it was just too big a cut to enforce in one parliament. And some of the bigger plans have upset people - bedroom tax etc - and those affected seem unwilling to listen to reason as to why these cuts are needed.

Who do we owe this money to exactly??    one handful of families names kept secret..

And why??  because you have to borrow your own printed money

and the actual reason is you have lost a historical battle some hundred years ago..  and lost the right of money printing.. but  you are not alone ..some other countries are also in same trouble

There are three camps.

1. Those that know little of deb and are glad it is the government with such a big debt and not themselves.

2. Those ,like me, that are genuinely worried that whichever government  of the day is borrowing ever more money to fund health, education, military and public sector spend than is coming in from taxes. I believe one day that the clag will hit the fan.

3. Those that believe it is all quite normal and no cause for worry.

I expect Rods2 will be along shortly to clarify the picture for us. :y
