Climate control staying on when switched off
« on: 03 April 2014, 22:36:09 »

Hi,

My climate control is switched off but the fans are still running even when the engine is off and key out the ignition, which flattened my battery earlier

Is it best to disconnect the fuse ? If so which one and where is it please?

Thanks

I've disconnected fuse 33 ( 30a ) which has stopped the power to the climate system, is that right ?  :-\

Not sure what's causing a live feed to the system even with no ignition on but whatever it is it's killing the battery  :(

Fans have a "system" that allows them to run once ignition is off to cool them when hot in summer, its done by one of the thermoswitches on the rad .... if that is afaulty perhaps yours "thinks" its overheating and the fans continue to run ...

The "old" site had a link to a test page that showed how to check out all the fans on a test plug ... can't find it ATM but I'll keep looking ...

EDIT  .. found it ..

Nige thanks for your message

What's happening is the blower won't turn off when the engine is turned off and I can't adjust the speed settings either ?

Just seems like its still drawing power and running even tho its displaying "off "

Was I right to disconnect the fuse for now ? Hope I got the right one  :-\

Sorry .. misunderstanding .. when you said "fans" I assumed - wrongly - you meant the radiator fans .. :(

If its the heater fan then its control panel problem, or possibly the "hedgehog" .. don't know if that failure - which gives the uncontrollable fan speed can also cause it to run when ignition is off.. :(

As the fan CAN be turned on after the ignition is switched off by pressing the ON button again .. (winter pack anyway) there must be a power source from the control panel to the hedgehog to the fan ...

No problem Nigel thanks  :y

Something is letting the blower continue to work even though I've turned it off and the key is out the ignition. Like I say I've got no control over the blower speeds or auto / off function, it just continues to run ??  >:(

Only way I could turn it off for now is disconnect the fuse to stop the power supply. It must have been running all day whilst car hasn't been used which flattened my battery

Any water evidence on/around the pollen filter/blocked scuttle :-\

Agreed either faulty hedgehog or climate panel :-\

Have you driven the car since removing the fuse.  If I remember correctly that fuse also covers the servotronic power steering so you will have no PAS until the fuse is replaced.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

No signs of any water damage or blocked scuttle, seems quite clear .  :-\

I took out the fuse as a way of cutting the power supply overnight to stop it killing the battery due to continuous running. Don't know what else I his stage ?  :(

As far as I can see, Fuse 33 only feeds the blower motor, so you're quite safe using the car with that fuse removed.

Prime suspect is the fan speed controller, as said. This is up behind the glove compartment, and normally dies because the scuttle drain has blocked and water has got to it.

Have you had any dampness in the passenger side footwell?

No sign of any water in the foot well or blocked scuttle Kevin  :-\

What baffled me was the system was still running / blowing whilst the engine was off, ignition off, and climate button turned to off

As said, fuse removed for the time being so I can at least use the car without a flat battery

Just wondering where to start diagnosis or what may need replacing ?

The system has the capability of running with everything off, called the "winter pack" .. therefore there has to be the circuitry inside the control panel to allow this. you have a fault that is making it "think" you have the winterpack selected on .... question is .. which bit ...

AFAIK it is either the hedgehog, which is a known failure point and does give some of your symptoms, unable to control fan speed being the prime one; or the control panel itself, which has loats of electronics in it that can cause havoc....

IMHO, and if it was mine, I'd be getting a hedgehog from a breaker and trying that, failing that, a control panel from a breaker as a last resort .. :(

Presumably, if you use the controls on the climate, and turn fan right down (ign on), the fan remains running as well?

If you have the facility, check what the climate panel is asking the fan to do with the fan off. If its asking for no fan, but fan still runs, replace speed controller (hedgehog)
