2.5TD (1998) auto box
« on: 16 April 2014, 19:35:58 »

Telephone call from wifey: "Help, The car won't pull away up our hill". Luckily, not far from home and I was able to drive it home.

Car was hot after a 200 mile journey.

Gearbox is slow (about 1 to 2 secs) to engage D when stationary and makes a nasty grindy vibrating noise until engaged. I don't know much about auto boxes but is a clutch band going wrong? Or something else?

Car is needed for Scotland trip in just over a week.

Assume the gearbox is a BIG problem, possibly terminal?

Can anyone advise?

Thanks, mc9

The usual thing is to to replace the ATF, although I would have thought there would be sign of it getting slowly worse, not just packing up. I think there will be plenty of AR25s available (or AR35 if you want a stronger box).

ATF was replaced about two or three years ago. Box has always had a tendency to slip out of gear, fixed by raking selector lever. I assumed this was caused by a faulty selector quadrant.

car is a bit tired now, so probably retire it rather than repair.

Thanks for that Shackeng, but I will retire the car. Sounds like the car has reached the end. Time to buy a replacement.

James V6CDX will swap it over for you. He took this out of my TD when I replaced it with an AR35 to cope with the chipped ECU. :y

More information on this fault.

Speedo and rev counter sometimes stop working. After starting car they don't work for the entire journey but no fault lights are on. Come back to car after a stop and they work again.

Gearbox is sometimes reluctant to change gear -- refuses to change down on hills and wants to hold a higher gear at a constant 30mph. Gears can be changed manually.

There are no fault lights on for ABS or anything else. Does this car (1998 2.5TD CDX) have ABS?

Is this a gearbox intermittent speed sensor fault? Would explain gearchange misbehaviour and no speedo / rev counter maybe?
