V8 Omega
« on: 08 June 2008, 23:42:44 »

There was one at PVS today...

Rover SD1 engine (just put in, still setting up) so no exhaust system.  Very early days!

Had a chat with the bloke who owns/built it too, and handed him a flyer which I was given at the last cambelt party!  He sounded quite interested in the site, as he said... "I've been looking for an omega owners site" so hopefully see him soon!

Few pictures (and video)

not a vx engine tho a shame really as a 5.7 chevvy or a 4.0 north* v8 will drop straight in

a 150bhp rover engine in an omega is a joke considering an mv6 / elite is 217bhp 3.2 v6

I tend to agree. Odd choice of engine. You'd need to throw serious money at a RV8 to significantly better the V6 and, whilst more tuning options exist for the Rover V8, you're starting off with a much inferior engine in the first place.

Northstar will. Vauxhall did it - TIS is full of info about it - but never released.

Small block engine fits in the gap far easier, and dont forget no-one has said its a 3.5, could be an ex TVR 5ltr.

Thats only a guess by the way  :)

Possible the owner already had a highly tuned one, or just extensive knowledge of the RV8.  I agree it will need a lot of work to get it up to V6 performance, but I bet it sounds nice :y

but I bet it sounds nice :y

Sounded great for the 50 feet it ran on the strip for.

The stupid bonnet with the massive air scoop is thing that spoils it, but arriving on 4 space savers was quite comical!!!

Ahh, sounds like a "break! the tyres are too wide to fit the trailer" moment.

The small block will to.

There are a couple of things I note of that V8 lump.

1) Its got the old P6 covers so it isnt an ex-TVR as the roller rockers used wont fit under them

2) Its got a 4 barrel carb (cant quite tell which sort, looks Holley ish, not a weber though) with what might wll be an edelbrock manifold so will be close on 200bhp with a reasonable cam.

3) I suspect its an old P series V8 (judging by the timing cover and water pump setup) so will be low compression............which makes it ripe for a blower (supercharger?)

Looks like a Holley carb semi-controlled fuel leak to me.

I guess if he's got drag racing in mind a supercharger / nitrous could well be on his todo list, which will liven it up a little.

Gotta be a project idea for JamesV6CDX there?  V8 Disco that won't sell + 4 pot Omega which he claims is a bit gutless.... ::)

 ;D ;D ;D

bucket with holes drilled in you mean  ;D - throttle bodies is the only way to go - induction roar and electronic control for precise mapping and ultimate power.
never liked that engine - supposed to be light and compact though which is why it usualy gets shoe horned in - but migs ain't exactly lacking in space as long as you don't mind snapping the scuttle off to work on the head ;D

Agreed. A mate of mine built one with a Weber 500 carb and it wasn't too bad. Not as thirsty and more responsive than the Holley generally.

If I were doing it these days injection is a total no-brainer. Either OE manifold and plenum (ideally a twin plenum  8-)) or ITBs.

I think these engines are popular because you can have the "V8 sound" without a total boat-anchor under the bonnet. I guess they're plentiful enough in this country (not many other V8s in the scrappers in any quantity) and, although most of them are totally breaked by the time they get there the parts to rebuild them aren't that expensive.

Weight is about 150-160 kg, IIRC, which is pretty good. Lighter than an X30XE by a long shot, I'd bet, and not really that much more than an iron-block 4 pot.
