Any GasSafe plumbers here around Solihull?
« on: 28 April 2014, 22:26:52 »

I know we have a few plumbers .. I'm just not sure if any of you are in that area.

My other halfs family are trying to modernise her nan's old house (now that she's passed away) with a view to moving in there with her disabled older brother as it's bigger than their current house.. anyway, they'd like to get the boiler moved from the bathroom upstairs down into the garage and four rads changed.

British Gash quoted £7000 for that (and I'm not 100% sure that includes moving the boiler but just replacing like for like!) which sounds like they're trying to bend them over without lube, to me..

Just wondering if there's anyone here who might be more reasonable, or know someone who is?

Ta!

Depends how far the garage is away from the house, got gas,cw,hw,flow and return pipes to extend, also depends where boiler is mounted to whether vertical or horizontal flue,£7000 is expensive, try some local heating engineers and get a few quotes  :y

British Gash quoted £7000 for that...

Sounds like BG's standard quote to try it on, TBH. Think my MIL got quoted that to do a straightforward boiler change in a 2 bed terrace. No relocation, just a straight swap and a bit of making good around the old flue and provision of a condensate drain into the washing machine waste pipe directly below it.  :o

£1500 worth of work, in other words. >:(

At least Dick Turpin was open about it. ;D

Indeed Kev, the price quoted astounded me.. then again my parents had a similarly eye watering quote from BG and still went with them against my advice; granted they did an (apparently) good job, but for the money it should have come gold plated with a free reach-around!

Garage is attached to the house and is directly beneath (but the other side of what would be the exterior wall) the location of the boiler which is currently in the bathroom; AFAIK there's no gas in the garage so it would involve bringing the water & gas out into the garage .. all those services are conveniently the other side of the wall at ground level, however, so a short run. Vertical flue through the (flat) garage roof, most likely.  £7k seemed mostrously excessive though, especially as I'm not sure it included the boiler move but rather a like-for-like combi boiler replacement plus changing four rads.

Sadly I don't know anyone up there to recommend .. hopefully they skip BG, though!

Similar story here. Old boiler replaced with combi, and re sited in the garage other side of the kitchen wall. £5k from British Gas.

Add, New water tank, shower pump, rad valves, stat, controller to that lot from a heating engineer. £2.4k iirc.

So twice as much work for less than half the price using a heating engineer. They where here a day and a half I think. :)

BG rely on the old school thinking that BG are the only way. Obviously not so. Heating engineers are qualified over and above a normal plumber, Gas safe, plumbing and electric.

They could not engineer thier way out of a cardboard box.

They are fitters in reality, those that go into the repair etc maybe tech's but, engineers no.

Its one of the only things I wish europe would sort, on the continent the title engineer is protected and rightly so.

This is what you get when you go to the large providers, same as electrical work.....stand by for a shafting when getting quotes :o I would say that the advice already offered is the way to go,find a small local independent company and see the difference in the quotes. We have just cut SSE loose for being too pricey and that was two boiler service contracts lost and it's the same as Sky.....did them as well after 20+ years of being good customers and having two contracts running, found out that they have been overcharging us £15 a month since 2006 and now they say it's too much money to give back.....A***oles!!  So shop around as big is not always best,as invariably you are paying to finance a top heavy organisation who can only talk the talk ::)

Write to them asking for a refund, giving them 21 days to respond. if they don't take them to the small claims court, you can fill the forms in online. They might leave it to the last minute, but they will settle before the case goes into court.
