TV Advertising
« on: 12 May 2014, 22:01:41 »

One of the reasons I stopped watching TV was due to the increase in the amount of advertising, which was increased a few years a go to a maximum of 9 minutes per hour in the UK. :( The attached chart shows how much worse it is in the US where the average is between 14.5 and 15.5 minutes per hour. :o :o

That is the reason I record decent drama's and watch them later usually on a wet weekend and fast forward from the river cruise ship to the next. :y

I do recall when there were 3 add breaks in an hour long program, now increased to 4 and seem to be longer............... :( :(

Edit, not sure you figure of 9 minutes per hour is correct in real life, I estimate 12 to 15 per hour program............. :-\ :-\

I find the number of gambling web sites advertising rather disturbing, personally. Especially given the politics behind it a few years ago.

But yes, a lot of the American programmes, Discovery etc, by the time they've had an ad brake every 20mins, had a join us after the break to see what happens, and then a recap after the ad break to remind their (original) ordinance what happened 5 minutes ago, we actually only get 15mins of actual footage every 20mins.

An hour long programme they say. Noooo its only 45mins long.

More ads during popular, peak-time progs, less in others.

This is something I'm always going on a rant about to the Mrs. We live in a world where everything has to be PC and nice and touchy-feely, and yet Joe Public is being pestered to gamble.

I'm not a puritan by any means, and have sat at tables in Las Vegas, but why are there so many gambling adverts ? Because they make money, the punters money. Is there such a thing as a poor bookie ? And the problem is that the people who are most tempted to gamble, are those who can least afford it. Rant over  ::)

. . . . . oh, and they seem to think that they can make evreything ok just by saying "Please gamble responsibly" . BS  >:(

I think the facility to gamble online is a horrendous concept.

Back to Ads. I am glad other people hate them. Even the BBC have got on the bandwagon with adverts for forthcoming programmes!

I watched the car is the star(Mini) episode last night on 4ondemand and was surprised that there were ads but you just surf and come back.

A few years back my mother went to Canada and the actors in the ads were the same as in the programme. She had to blink before she realsied

I think that the latest ones that advertise ITV itself, (the goggly eyed prat in the check shirt etc) are downright
rubbish, or am i just getting too old. :-\

TV in the US and Canada is absolutely unwatchable due to the level of advertising. If I found myself living there I wouldn't bother with a TV. Sky's output is almost as bad, and you get to pay a fortune for it. On ITV, the programmes are actually poorer quality than the adverts, on the whole, so I wouldn't know. :-X

This is one reason why I hope that the BBC remains as it is.

Expose dear old 'Auntie' to market forces and advertising will become almost inevitable.

Over the next few years view on demand will become the norm. I'm sure there will be various revenue models like, lots of adverts, program free, pay for program no adverts etc. :)

The BBC will have to change as the licence fee will be an odd quirk and unenforceable. They will have to go over to a pay to view model, sponsorship or advertising or a direct Government subsidy.

There will be no such thing as broadcasting, just program release schedules on the program makers or aggregator websites, likewise virtually no live TV as such, where you just download it from a server.
