In the last 48 hours, the rain has stopped for long enough for me to de-weed the drive and jetwash the Omega... and not a lot else. The dog is desperately holding in a piddle cos she won't go outside if it's anything more than slight sea threat... tough little buggers, Staffies...

Sunday, and still raining, thank goodness I'm not in a tent!
Why? My tent is as dry, warm and a damn sight less cramped than a burger van ;)

With mains water plugged straight in, waste into a drain, hot water system, didn't have to treck to the shower block every morning in the pouring rain. ;D

Fixed beds, home from home :y

Wardrobe/airing cupboard to keep your clothes dry :y

Hard standing pitch, not bringing mud into the living area if we did go out ;)

There were a few tents on the site, (large ones at that) every time we saw the occupants of said, they looked like drowning rats. ;D

Procedure with a caravan when arriving on site in the pouring rain.

All using an umbrella:-

1. Unhitch.

2. Level van.

3. Plug in mains.

4. Plug in mains water supply.

5. Put waste pipe into drian.

6. Enter van and put kettle on.

7. Relax with a nice cup of tea.

Time taken 15 mins.

Tent.

Get groundsheet out of car, lay it flat and watch it become a lake.

Get tent out of car, lay it out and sort out poles.

Erect tent on the lake.

Batten down with guide ropes.

Lug all the camping gear out of car.

Fetch some water from the tap at the other end of the field.

Best part of an hour, if your lucky.

Er..... I know which I prefer.

Yeah, being able to do your morning rituals in your wardrobe. That's sure to make him jealous. ;)

Procedure with a caravan when arriving on site in the pouring rain.
.................

7. Relax with a nice cup of tea and watch the campers get soaked.
.................
Er..... I know which I prefer.

Having been a camper for years before we bought a caravan, we used to wonder what the benefits were as we had every conceivable item to make life comfortable. We had heaters, TV and all on full electrics. We only gave up camping after a severe battering of gale force wind, which did its best to uproot things. When we bought our first caravan twenty odd years ago it became clear what the benefits are, so we have subsequently replaced them with new ones over the years. They are warm and comfy, off the ground and you don't hear creaking poles when it's blowing a gale. You don't have to leave the van to use shower blocks and toilet blocks, it's all there in the van. You are never cold as you have multiple heaters and instant hot water and heated towel rails to dry stuff. They also serve as an extra bedroom for guests at home if it sits on the drive like ours does.  :y

The downside of caravans:
You have to store them.
They are expensive if you don't make full use of them, a decent one weighing in at around £20K now, and my awning and annexe was an additional £2K, plus all the extra bits.
You have to tow them, which in itself can put some off.
Pitch fees on commercialised sites are not cheap.

I have now weighed up the cost of the van, the pitch fees, the additional fuel costs towing and we have decided to retire from caravanning. We rent a cottage at a destination of our choice now and the cost is not much different.
If anyone thinks people caravan as a cheap holiday you are mistaken. It is not a cheap holiday, as the price of a caravan and required ancillaries will get you several foreign holidays on Costa-del-bargain.

The advantage to me is I can sleep in my own bed that no-one else has slept in, it's mine, if I don't like where I am I can move on.

Not cheap I'll grant you, but is anything these days?

We've had seven mini breaks in it so far this year, and more to come.
