These so called professionals, by and large I have little time for them. Truth be known, many  are no more capable than you and I.
I'm probably just about the most inept mechanic in England but even I was able to change the coolant.....fuel filter.....disc brakes and pads on the family Corsa.

The same applies to the Omega. I couldn't change the oil cooler, but I'm more than capable of changing the rear pads......coolant and plugs (even bastard number 6 )

Now back to the unsavoury saga of Mrs Opti's two month old laptop....which she hurled at me like a demented nutter.

Toshiba wanted £345 to change the screen plus £50 P and P.....making £395......How f**king crazy is that?

The local computer repair shop wants £160.....still crazy money

So, after pulling apart the laptop, which took about 30 minutes I removed the old screen.

I'm now waiting for a new screen to arrive which has cost me the princely sum of £37 including delivery.  Fifteen minutes to fit the new screen and the 'crazed' Mrs Opti can have her beloved laptop back.

Like I say chaps....... If you can fix it yourself then you should.

Not a bad mantra. Very occasionally you come unstuck. The biggest problem most folk have is having the tools, space and time to fix things.

Sadly we live in an age when we are encouraged to throw away and buy new.

Had the same recently with her Dyson animal of some 12 or 14 years.  Despite their bad press, it does exactly what was asked of it until the motor let its smoke out.

She was leafing through glossy pics of new ones at the thick end of £400.  I was on ebay and amazon etc for a replacement motor!

Youtube gave a step by step and a new motor was something like £40 delivered.  Half an hour later, back together and working.

Happy days!

Dyson do a repair survive for £50 to the door.  Btw.

But ordinarily, yes, many a repair centre encountered is sales orientated. And I don't mean sales of spare parts.

A few years back we needed a new soakaway. I obtained about seven or eight quotes, the best coming in at close to £4,000. Sod that.



Instead, I bought all the necessary pipework and gravel for £200 and then hired a mini-digger for the weekend ......about another £70.

With the help of a couple of friends it worked perfectly. The most unpleasant aspect of the job was connecting the pipework to the septic tank.......now that was a shit job.

With so much stuff, such a laptop lids, Dysons, Kindles etc etc held together with plastic clips, usually the hardest part is separating with the right knack of not breaking the clips. Fortunately guides from the tinterweb or often invaluable...  ...but even so, on the 2 iPod Classics I've had to replace the battery in, I've had to buy a new case after breaking clips...
