I suspect they're just using remote desktop, and as mark says the ports are pre-opened for this, allowing any potential loopholes to be exploited..

Sorry James, and Mark, I do not understand what you mean. :-? :-?   With BT you HAVE to open and authorize certain 'windows' to allow the operator to get into your sytem with special codes.  They do NOT just go straight into your system without your imput.  I also have firewall and other security features. ;)

I agree you have to authorise their specific connection in the software, BUT for them to make the connection to the pc in the first place, it needs port 3389 open - and with this port open, a loophole potentially exists for hackers.

Right!  Thanks!  I didn't know that, but there again if you cannot trust BT when you are desperate for their assistance and I operate on their internet system, who can I trust?

I have heard of other internet users who do not enjoy the level of 'remote' assistance that I do and they are ripping their hair out because the problem(s) are left unresolved.  BT have always 'sorted it' within  minutes.

Fully agree it makes support fantastically easy and you probably CAN trust BT.

It's more likely the other hackers out there that will exploit you, based on the fact that the port has been opened up FOR BT.

What you are over looking is that if a BT help desk person can remote connect to your computer, then so can a hacker......

Not quite Mark, because you have to allow BT access to your system, and if you do not do this they can't access it.  We all know that hackers can get into any system, but if we constantly worried about that no-one would use any computer system. ::) ::) ::)

What  I find far more worrying is all the people who use sites like e-bay, and wonder why they get ripped off! ::) ::)

Think your missing the point, there is clearly some holes in the fire wall setup (if there is a fire wall!)

I am sure there not setting up a VPN link as that would require a level of config at the customers end!

ZONE ALARM wouldn't let BT in until I gave permission.

I have often spoken to the BT helpdesk in Indian; sometimes 0200 in the morning, but always found them extremely helpful, polite and knowledgeable.  Giving them remote access in my mind is great as they just get on and sort your problem without any fuss, and you can always see what they are doing.  Don't see the problem myself with these BT personnel.  They get my vote anyday :y :y :y

Erm.......I phone because I was having trouble connecting to my dial up broadband, and he told me to go to www..........

How can I go to www.......when I cant connect to the internet?

Good point Sir.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................long silence ;D

Excatly, I've just gone on to Virgin, only for the 20 meg download speed though. I used to be with BT, and have used the remote access many times. You can see where their going/clicking, and do advise............. if ther's anything on your desktop you dont want them to see, get rid of it. It's like this peeps......if you want your pc sorting and you've nothing to hide then whats the problem  ::)

While ever you are connected to the internet the is allways potential for a hacker.  Simple as.

Blocking ports will deny access yes.

Lets give you all something to think about.

Web site stats.

I had my eyes opened a few years ago, it was made aware to me that screen size/res, operating system, IP addy, even www logging of where you had been and even where you went off to was possibe

Do you really think hackers cant get on to your machine .

Banks are hacked on a rgular basis, they darnt admit, but they end up taking on the conmen as security advisers.

Look at the hackers that gained access to the white house and the pentagon.

There are numerous back doors that have been known issues that are writen into windows.

Yes it's amazing what they show on Tv, one of the biggest issues thee days are people that dont secure thier wireless network down.

In fact there is even a forum member that has a utility in his signaure that tells you your own IP, remember Big Brother is watching.

Were you even aware all your emails get scanned ?

Scary, never mind spooky.

I had a problem with my BT broadband earlier. I phoned BT and the guy at the other end (who I could hardly understand) asked me if he could remotely access my computer. I agreed but I didn't like it at all.

He was clicking all over the place and I felt like someone was going through my personal things. It felt a bit like being burgled.

DONT LIKE IT! >:(
Did he find all your hidden "porn files"? :P

Most systems have some element of remote access, which hopefully the firewall will block.  However, I suspect the huge majority of people don't have a firewall (or those that do use a s/w firewall on the pc they are trying to protect, which isn't that secure, as has been proven time and time again), and rely on the NAT function of their routers.

Looking at my firewall logs, it seems there are a lot of NAT attacks going on at the moment.

But if you do (intentionally or unintentionally) punch a hole trough your firewall, you are dependent on the OS and apps being secure - something which shocked me with VNC which runs on the media center when one evening whilst watching a film, a command window appeared, and some scroat tried FTPing some files to it....  ....kind of surreal when you are watching telly and see that pop up!
