Tomatoes are probably a bit big for those. I always grow mine outside anyway, though a bit late to start now I guess? They are easy to grow, just need daily watering and weekly feeding (Tomorite type feed, but use supermarket own brand as its cheaper and just as good)
Why are most supermarket toms so tasteless?......especially the larger ones.
Several reasons.
The varieties grown commercially are all about size, shape, crop yield, disease resistance and do they travel without getting damaged. Taste comes low down. Also they are harvested before they are ripe. natural ripening in sun helps greatly with flavour. It is quite an eye opener to see the acres of desert land in Almeria that are covered in a sea of plastic greenhouses where plants are grown to produce salad veg for the North European market. Grim, really grim places.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasticulture It is the same with Strawberries. My dad has Sovereign plants from pre war stock (takes new runner plants every year). They are divine compared with the garbage supermarkets sell.
In England we used to grow our own tomatoes each year and were pleased with the result. Ditto when we came to Spain. I have to say, I have never tasted better tomatoes than ones we grow here picked when the ambient temp is maybe 35Deg C.
