Can't do the pedal trick, throttle goes mad!
« on: 31 May 2014, 14:18:27 »

Hi All.

When I tried to do the pedal trick the EML and spanner light both flick on and off. I can hear the throttle body making a noise. The throttle body keeps moving the butterfly. When I press down on the accelerator pedal it keeps opening and closing the butterfly.

When the ignition is left on and without starting the engine or touching the accelerator pedal, every minute (approx) the butterfly tries closing then opens a little bit, it does this for a about 30 seconds then settles, then a minute or so later does it again.

It has to be a sensor somewhere but I can't get the codes.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

No experience if this problem, but the throttle shouldn't move during the pedal trick, so I wonder if the drive by wire or brake light electrickary has an issue...?

Starter for 10, check the connections to throttle body plug, accelerator pedal and brake light switch...?

Note, I'm shite with electrics so see what others say. :)

Essex Al, from memory, had the same problem as me a while back, clicking throttle bodies (and purple relay) which was was connected to a Non Starter issue.

Does the Engine fire up and run as normal?

Hi All and thanks for the responses.

Yep engine fires up ok, runs, revs and drives but as you drive down the road it's like the butterfly opens and closes of it's own accord, the EML and Spanner lights flash on, speedo and rev counter drop to zero...then a second later it's ok, then X amount of time later it does it again or when you put your foot down or go up a hill.

With the engine not running and with the ignition on...the EML and spanner flash alternately, then when the throttle body stops going mad they stay on together...a second later they go off and 30 seconds later they do the same again.

With ignition on and accelerator pedal fully down, the butterfly just goes closed to open non stop and the warning lights flash alternately until you lift off the pedal...this is what's stopping me from getting the fault codes...I know there is at least a couple of codes as the pedal trick worked once but my pen wouldn't work.

Thanks again

Press down hard and quickly on the accelerator, the engine makes a loud sucking sound and the warning lights come on...but it ticks over lovely.

The fact that the Engine runs and drives as it should kind of rules out the ECU (in theory), think I would start with OBD2 Reader and see if any codes are Active or Pending and if poss see whats going on with Live Data. A chat with a Tech 2 wouldn't go a miss.

Failing that, start checking plugs on Sensors etc, Throttle Boddies, Peddle Sensor, also worth checking the Main Connectors below the Battery, good Earth return from Fuse Box, ECU, Loom back the Battery etc.

Sounds to me like the throttle position sender and the throttle body are not "conversing" correctly through the "drive by wire" system... possibly an intermittent contact somewhere causing erratic signals

3 things I would be looking at ...

1. Cleaning the throttle position sensor contacts and as much of the internals as I could with switch cleaner

2. Cleaning the throttle body contacts and as much of the internals as possible with switch cleaner

3. Checking the wiring from the throttle position sensor right through to the throttle body (I think it goes via the ECU) for damage/chafing

:(

Just back from a weekend away so a bit late in joining this one .

It was not me that had a similar problem it was Toledodude, Paul from Ipswich ,  although I was involved in trying to sort it .

His problem was "chattering" butterflies & non start .  That was a faulty ECU .  But this problem sounds totally different  :-\ :-\
