AVG is quite resource hungry and could be slowing your computer and hence your connection.  Switch to Microsoft Essentials or Avast which seem to do a pretty decent job, and are not as taxing on your computer :y

+1, AVG used to be good when the East European Students were running it, but now sadly a heavy resorce hog, I use the MS one myself, seems to work well in the background. :y

When you say your speed isn't what it's supposed to be.....does it affect the way you use your PC? Or....are you just annoyed at the fact that you are paying for something you're not getting?

It needs retiring for a newer model if you dont want to slow your connection.  I had no idea it was that old or a single core, I imagine that it is your computer capacity that is holding up your connection speed.  You can try upping the RAM but you might be throwing good money after bad :-\
