2.2 DTI bad starting from cold (complicated)
« on: 20 June 2014, 20:59:50 »

Currently waiting for recovery as trying to start car has flattened battery.

Symptoms are odd. It only starts really well when is at running temperature. It starts well enough when cold enough for glow plug light to come on. Starts OK ish above glow plug light temperature but still first thing in the morning. It all but refuses to start when ambient temperature is fairly warm (19 and above, roughly).

It turns over fine, will catch the odd time but not enough and then usually eventually cough into life with white smoke out the back. Not losing coolant so I suspect just because it's flooded. The warmer the ambient temperature, the longer it takes to start.

Initially I was thinking glow plugs, until I realised they don't come on above a certain temperature. But then someone told me they still do a bit.

The suggestions I've had are glow plugs, or gunked up egr.

Car has done 137k, no oil or coolant loss, runs like a dream once started.

Ideas please before the wife kills me for buying a duff car!

Thanks

Your way round makes sense. My way round baffles me. Is there a computer thing I can plug in to check values it thinks? I had a vacgom for my old galaxy, cost a tenner and reads all ECUs. Saves randomly changing things

Recovery been, jump leads and is coughed into life. He's confirmed the white smoke is unburnt fuel and nothing more sinister. He also commented engine songs rattly. It does, I just don't know if it's a rattly sounding engine. It's got fresh oil in it 2 weeks ago. I asked him what could be causing the problem, he says get battery tested and maybe glow plugs, then went through a potential list from tee simple right up to engine rebuild. Which doesn't really narrow things down.

I did however convince him to plug code reader in. No fault codes at all which is promising. He said all the live data seemed fine.

He also saw slight sooty deposits on the turbo, thinks it's leading on the exhaust side very slightly. I've never deemed it to be a problem, just thought the car has done 137k I'm not expecting a shiny engine.

Starting issues are the only issue I've got so I think I'll start with the battery as that's easy (currently got battery from my pug 405 TD, fairly new battery but maybe doesn't have enough amps?) If still no joy then I'll do glow plugs. Beyond that I'll cross that bridge if/when it comes.

Any comments on the above or further suggestions appreciated  :y

The old 2.2DTi issue,
1. Injector return lines (new kit about £20 from dealer)
2. Top seal on injectors (let's in air and fuel returns to tank)
3. EGR valve covered in carbon.
4. Inlet manifold has high build up of carbon

I have just done 2,3,and 4 on my brothers elite and today got the engine running again, and its a good idea to fit the small hand pump to the fuel feed line. If the inlet manifold has never been cleaned you have done well to get to 137K :y

What cost am I looking at for those? And will any of them make it rattly? I'm a bit concerned now he's said that. Although he did seem to despise this engine so I've got some straws to clutch onto :P

All the parts to do the top seals and inlet manifold were £86 from Vauxhall (on trade club) plus £20 for the return/spill line kit. I'll see if i can find the link on how to do the jobs. :y
