Omega B 2.0 petrol 1999 starting issues
« on: 05 July 2014, 18:44:13 »

Hi,

My Omega B 2.0 petrol is having real difficulty starting. It cranks fine (has new battery, alternator, starter, plugs, leads) but generally takes forever to fire. Sometimes it's immediate but not often.

If I roll it down a slope it fires up after just a few feet - no problem. Runs fine all the way from idling to 90+ for hours on end.

The only logic I managed to apply to this is that the sparks (and/or fuel supply?) are failing as the battery voltage drops when cranking.

Any comments please?

Starter for 10.

Crank sensor? :)

But see what the 4pot owners say.

Nothing showing on the dash, i.e. no ecu light, but I haven't specifically read the codes because I assumed there wouldn't be any with no light. Is that not true?

Crank Sensor often doesn't throw up a fault on the 4 pot, but from your description it's a better than even bet that the Sensor is giving up the ghost. Please only replace with a genuine GM replacement as Pattern ones are definately a false economy/ waste of money :y

Well, that's my wallet £170 lighter (yes, I wimped out and had the crank sensor fitted for me!).

Unfortunately the problem isn't significantly better, although it hasn't started up 180deg out yet as it did before.

The only things I have left to replace are the cam sensor and coil pack. Any suggestions? Do I have to pay Vauxhall £70+ for a coil pack or can I go elsewhere?

Regards.

My money is on the Cam Sensor rather than Crank.

Edit: didn't read it properly, youve already had the Crank Sensor done, on the 2.0 I would have done the Cam before the Crank Sensor.

Do the Cam Sensor first, if no joy, I would get my hands on a known good 2nd Diss Pack to prove a point, before parting with good money with VX for a new one, the Diss Packs normally start to miss fire before totally giving up the ghost, check Diss Pack control plug for good connection etc, can you see a spark when cranking.

OK, did the cam sensor (cheap one from a normally very reliable source). Starts more-or-less normally now but the ecu light is on and the revs are limited to about 4500. Bit the bullet, forked out £62 for a Vauxhall version, fitted, ecu light gone, revs fine.

So I guess there's another couple of lessons learnt - painfully! Always buy Vauxhall cam sensors (and crank sensors, timing belts, head gaskets and cam cover gaskets) and when in doubt always do the cam sensor first - it's a million times easier.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks.

This is exactly why we specify genuine in some cases, not always, depends on the part, but we do this based on experience over the years and most cost effective.

Sadly some people think it's just the people with too much money say genuine, for no reason other than it's GM. Then create a load of fuss over why we suggest genuine, still lesson learned the hard way  :y
