Yes on July the *th I posted that My Omega V6 started cutting out on me when was almost home , It starts ok but after a while it cuts out again and again. Had carbereta cleamed, no change .Your replies were Cam Shaft Cencers had them done no diferent. Now left with the Idle Control Valve Yes, or can there be any other causes !!..thank you..
Ok, so some info here.
The V6 Omega is a fuel injected car and hence there is no carburettor, there is however a throttle butterfly (twin in this case) which can get gummed up but, would not and cannot cause cutting out.
The reason is that the idle air bypasses the throttle butterfly via the idle control valve, if this sticks shut then its possible for the engine to cut out however, this can only ever occur when the engine is idling (so easy to determine as if the car cuts out at any sort of speed, it CAN NOT be the idle control valve).
There is however a very key sensor which is the crank shaft sensor and this tells the electronics the engine speed and the position of the crankshaft.
When this fails it can cause the engine to cut out.
There is also a cam shaft sensor, this tells the electronics which cylinder is on the firing stroke so it can determine injection and ignition correctly, when this fails (and it never does on the V6), the engine goes into a limp mode where the rpm is restricted to 4000rpm and the injectors are bank fired rather than sequentially fired.
So if the engine is cutting out at idle then the idle control valve is worth cleaning, if the engine is cutting out randomly then its most likely crank sensor and we advise to go genuine as the aftermarket parts are poor quality.
