air con woes....what to do?
« on: 25 July 2014, 11:44:39 »

I expect a few members will remember me posting about a leaky fill valve that I as stated was able to replace for a fiver, I had it topped up again with gas and it didn't work, the garage finally realised the initial leak was on the compressor but said as there was a lot of oil around it the leak dye was not as clear.

Firsty I had to argue the fact that I wanted my money back on the gas recharge as surely the garage is at fault for missing the major leak on the first leak test! It took me 15mins of arguing and threats ie taking all my vehicles to another garage (which I will be now anyway) to get the money back.

Really I am at a loss to know what to do now, is the compressor worth replacing? I am going away in less than 2 weeks and have a wife two kids under 2 and a dog in what could be a hot journey!

any advice!

Know how you feel, new compressor=£180 or a good s/hand £20-£30 definitely worth the trouble, especially as you are going on your holidays and this weather is predicted to last. Nigel, Omega 52 in Nottingham has one for sale on the Bay of Gay and by the picture it looks in good shape, 8) and if you can't fit it yourself then give a shout out on here as there will be someone who could possibly help with it. :y

Thanks its really the time issue I suppose, wife relies on car a lot so taking it off road for a few days while I work underneath it between dad duties is difficult, i'm also a little concerned i'm throwing good money at this for what might be only the odd day when it's needed, I am going on the words of a garage that miss diagnosed the issue in the first place, what if it's just a washer into compressor or when I change compressor it turns out its something else as well.

money is the deciding factor to be fair i'm still bitter from paying out on a service just to find the  leak in the first place!

I guess in a way you are answering your own question,if you are staying in the UK then there's a good chance that you can get by and make do,but if you are heading to warmer climes then on a personal basis I would get it fixed. But again is the car staying for a while or is it due for replacement?another deciding factor as to the financial consideration ,but whatever you decide I'm sure the kids and the dog won't even notice that you don't have working A/C and they'll have a good time whatever 8) :y

They tend to leak at the pipe seals if not used for a while or run on Eco, ime.

Could it stop leaking with use or is it too far gone? Would a leak condemn the pump out of hand? Not necessarily, without seeing it, IME.
