Omega engine block... what to measure
« on: 30 July 2014, 10:34:42 »

Hi guys,

I'm soon going to be the proud owner of a 3L cylinder block (courtesy of Red Baron...thanks mate).

I wanted a spare engine in case (however unlikely) i was to throw a rod or something hideous like that and i could get the old girl up and running again in no time. plus a 3L upgrade appeals  8)

However, in the mean time when i get it back home ill have it on the bench and do a bit of an overhaul on it and take a bunch of measurements.

So far i have a ''off the top of my head'' list that comprises:

oil pump measurements (end float, clearances etc.)
main bearing clearances
con rod bearing clearances
bore measurement
piston ring gap
front seal replacement
rear seal replacement
pick up/strainer clean out (should i be soaking this in diesel or something???)

Has anyone else done this? Would love to hear of any block overhauls being done. Anything else to measure?

Cheers folks  :y

You are going to need some expensive measuring equipment to do all of that.
Realistically, an appropriate micrometer and some plastigauge will give the bearing clearances.
However, fixing any faults with the crank, bores and bearings are out of your hands as they all require specialist machining. And you're then talking about a full rebuild, which is unlikely to be economically viable.

I'd be changing the gaskets, having a good cleanup and calling it done.

Thanks Nick,

All that i've listed i can do no problem (i got a mate that has a DTI and i got feeler blades, plastgauge etc)

But as you say, if i found the bore was out of spec then im nackered lol hopefully that wont be the case.

but it will also be great to get to know the omega engine a little better too.

what gaskets will i need to replace? sump, oil pump, front/rear seals, pick up o ring......?

tbh, if i had been keeping it i would have re-built it as a spare myself.  ;)

First edition Haynes Manual might just be old enough to have all the specs in it :-\

Failing that, try ebay.com as the core engine is actually used in alot of Gm stuff, and the Yanks are generally better equipped when it comes to technical data being available to the masses :y
