Its not got any cheaper then, 8 pound a pint (read 500ml or less in reality) in the bars when I was over there last year.

But then the minimum wage is about 14-16 euros an hour out there.

An estate certainly is useful for that and the familiar chink, chink, chink all the way home. :y :y :y

Is it worth it anymore?

I remember my brother picking me up from Leicester having set off from North Yorkshire at the crack of dawn. We had a drink and a quiche from Tesco near Ashford, then continued unabated. Cheapest ferry from the Dover bucket office.(was a noisy hovercraft with free newsaper and glass of orange juice) Straight up to Belgium. ten thousand fags, three bars of chocolate then back to Calais. Filled up with cheaper fuel and all the rest of the space in the car with cheap beer and wine from Eastenders. Nod to customs officer, Back home for midnight. Absolutely whacked. Hardest days work ever. Took three years to smoke and drink it all. ;D

 ;D ;D ;D

How do you think I managed to afford our ruin in Spain.

We went skiing in Norway once and never again. We couldn't afford enough anaesthetic drink to sooth the aches away ready for the next day. It was minus eleven too.

Had two ice cold beers and free tapas ( slices of bread, 2 slices each of cured ham and a few crisps) after shopping tonight. 2 euros in total(about £1.65) But then the average wage here is 1.20 an hour ;D ;D ;D

Only if you are in easy travelling distance of Dover/Folkestone. When I am in London then yes it is worth it.

I drink a lot of wine.

Day return on the Ferry, £30 or so.
Petrol around another £50

However, one of the wine warehouses does a deal. Spend at least £250 and they email you a code for a free next day trip. So, when you've been once it self perpetuates.

http://www.calaiswine.co.uk/

You need to be prepared to buy a lot. But be selective.

This trip I bought Paro Alto Argentinian Malbec and also Jacobs Creek Vermentino. Both around £6 a bottle in the UK, and both really nice, I've tried them before. I paid £2 a bottle. I also bought quite a lot of other more expensive wines, but that's my choice.

Petrol and crossing (if not a free one) £80. Buy at least 30 bottles (6 cases) and you've made back the cost. Then add 5% quality French lager at 11.50 for 24 x 500ml cans and you can soon justify the trip. The absolute minimum saving on UK wine price is around £2 a bottle, usually much more. So it all depends on quantity.

If you smoke, a 30 minute drive up to Belgium, and you certainly justify it. I dont smoke any more, but I used to and my smokes were less than half price.

Oh, I also go shopping in Auchan supermarket for other stuff  :y

One thing. You need a big car, like an Omega Estate !

More than you will get in a big estate car. They are not really very interested in booze, It's tobacco products they keep an eye out for.

Went to Oslo in '06. It was at the time the second most expensive city in the world (behind Tokyo).

Beer cost about £7 a pint  :o
