going soft in my old age
« on: 13 August 2014, 18:40:40 »

Her C3 hasn't been used for a few days while we were away in the caravan. Got back & took C3 for its MOT a few miles away, drove fine all the way, started up for the MOT & the rad fan started running all the time & the high temp warning light came on (no temp gauge). The car thought it was over heating, but the draught from the fan was cold, so I suspected a failed sensor .... coolant temp?  :-\
Drove car back from its MOT pass  :y and connected my Maxiscan and sure enough it showed coolant temp sensor fault code. Drove it around the corner (Maxiscan shows the temp was 175 deg F .... not sure why it's reading it F  ???) to get a price from Citroen foe the sensor. Service bloke immediately said there's a mod for the 1600 petrol C3 ................he's picking the car up tomorrow & I'm paying a main dealer for the privilege!  :o :o

It's only a tank of fuel  :-X :-X

Mean while the Smart  is still away ................  :-\ :-\

Er....so your paying for a Citroen dealer to fit a modification to rectify a design problem.....is this the one where they replace the fan with its integrated control circuit?

As far as I know the original temp sensor fails and because it's integral to the thermostat housing they fit a new sensor to where there is now a bleed screw. I'm paying someone else as I'm in work now till Mon, she wants a car for work over the wk/end too and the Smart is in dock too. If SWMBO is happy then it makes a quiet life all round!

So ...... the coolant temp sensor is done but - I've just had the old tale of 'while we've had the car we've noticed .....'
a weep from the water pump and

a slight oil leak from the 'oil pump solenoid' at the back of the engine. So I obviously asked what was that ..... he rambled on about it pumping oil etc until I told him I did know one end of an engine from the other ...... 'er! I'll get back to you then exactly what it does'. Apparently I can get an 80% contribution from Citroen if I decided to go ahead & get them to do it but I'd still have to shell out c£200  ??? ???

Not bad for a 60 plate car with a little over 20 000 miles on the clock!  :-\

Presume the solenoid is this part: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-CITROEN-1-6-PETROL-EP6-INJECTION-OIL-PUMP-SOLENOID-VALVE-V764723880-/321311808540?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4acfad1c1c

Looks a lot like the solenoid valve that drove the variable valve timing on the MR2; but Google tells me the newer engines have a "Solenoid controlled oil pump" - picture here in Google cache; http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:x06vn5exnj4J:www.e-tuners.com/forum/viewtopic.php%3Ff%3D3%26t%3D602+&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk&client=safari

You could be onto something there Aaron ..... I believe this engine has variable valve timing (sows how much notice I take of this car  ::))
