Problems galore
« on: 18 August 2014, 14:13:41 »

Hello, this is my first post. I have been given an omega estate. It's a 1998 2.0 GLS. It has few obvious problems that need sorting out...rust on the bottom of the doors and around the rear wiper, it needs four new tyres, the exhaust is shot, it leans to one side at the back so I'm guessing shocks/springs, there is oil leaking from the rocker cover gasket and the radiator is rusty brown at the bottom so I guess that's leaking too.
I'm sure it won't take long to sort out, but the thing I'm not sure about is it makes a beeping sound when I turn it off and I'm sure I could smell burning last night. Any ideas as to what this might be?

Thanks.

Looking at the service history, the cambelt was last changed at 70,000 miles and it's done 172,000 now. So I guess that's another job. I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth the trouble.

Job number one will be to remove the power sounder...

Are the tyres evenly worn or chewed up on one edge?

Exhaust can be got from Poland via eBay for less than £100.

Springs can be obtained from €28, see link in other thread... They do shocks as well...

That should get you started :y

The radiator can be changed along with the cambelt, waterpump and coolant. Cam cover gasket and breather clean should sort the oil leak and burning smell.

Gearbox manual or auto will likely need a fluid top up.

As for tyres, aim for black and round and go from there ::)

That's a very long, expensive sounding list. Not sure I can be arsed now.

Cam cover is a doddle on the 4 pots lovely little job, get gasket from Vauxhall though.

Car sitting lob sided, probably springs, common for them to snap, I'm currently ordering a pair, £33 each delivered. (Sachs, from ECP)

Rust? Well can live with that :)

Tyres, keep an eye out for breakers here, bargins to be had. I had same issue 4x new tyres pricey! So got 4x Kumo 31's with CDX alloys for 100 notes all in. Tyres almost new  :y :y

Hi Sheriff, and welcome to oof.

Depends how much your replacement costs, and then how much needs doing to that if that seller has the same approach. If diy its worth doing. Probably not if paying a garage.

There's plenty of guides and advice on old threads to guide you. But the car has been neglected by the sound of it, as cam belts are 4 years or 40k, which ever comes first.

172 k is high though. :(

If auto the gear box might be cam sensor. Might...

Decided not to proceed with the omega. I've seen a lovely chevrolet orlando and, although much more expensive, it seems to be far superior to an outdated barge.
