Got new arches to be welded in...
« on: 22 August 2014, 16:58:50 »

...anyone want the job of cutting out old, welding in new and spraying?

Thought I'd offer it here before going to a body shop. Been quoted £200 a side (£400 total) but I'd rather pay that to one of the OOFers and ''keep it in house''  ;D

I contacted Symes but sadly he's very busy.

Let me know :)

...and no STEMO, you're not going anywhere near my car  ;D

All that for £200 a side?
You should have left it with them and told them to get on with it!
A quote like that would probably stop me from doing it myself.

That price does seem very keen Webster.

Is it a reputable place?  As in, have you had work done there before, or know people who have?

Webby

Are these the rear? If so what do the repair panels look like and where did you get them? As others have said, £200 per side to fit and paint seems a bargain

Still need a grinder to split the flanges, and cut into the doorshut. Not to mention clean up the metal to weld in the new.
Plasma cutters are great, and I have one. But by the time I've dragged the compressor through the house, up the cellar steps, filled it with air and done the same with the plasma cutter, I could have cut out and trimmed the arch with a grinder. Choosing the right tool for the job is easier when you have a selection!

I thought the plasma cutter left a load of SLAAAAAAAAG?

I'm going to go to the placei was initially quoted (even though I wish they'd answer their phone  ::)) as at £200 a side seems to get the approval of the OOF Mafia contingent  :y

If using a decent, clean and dry air supply then a plasma cutter should only leave a slightly burnt edge that requires virtually no cleanup. Even properly used, a cut from an angle grinder needs something similar.

Ooper missis  :o ::) ;D

When it comes to doing mine i'd be tempted to angle grind the off rather than faff about with sanding the old rust treating and painting ..it only comes back and looks worse when it bubbles through  :(
