2.5TD timing chains
« on: 24 August 2014, 11:20:52 »

Hi all, hope everyone is well.

Question for the tractor owners: has anyone ever had a timing chain snap on the 2.5 diesel M51 engine? Any idea what sort of mileage you get before they [the chains] need replacing?

Cheers.

I haven't heard of one going, but no doubt that comment will fetch one out of the woodwork. I get the impression that a well serviced TD will last forever, (well I've had mine for 15 years and 130k :-X) :y :y :y

Sounds promising.

Any issues with FIP chain stretch?

The chains stretch and the plastic chain guides go brittle and break. Absolute pig to change, official documentation says the head has to come off, as well as the sump (which in an Omega means either dropping the subframe, or removing the engine).

Local dealer was servicing a 600k mile one when I still had mine. Not sure how much of it was original though.

I bought all the parts for mine for about £200 from a BMW dealer. It's not too bad a job but I'm sure at the time I would have been pulling my hair out. You don't have to remove the head but you have to drop the front of the sump :y
