As said timing chains/tensioners a weak point.Ideally you want to see evidence that these have been changed for the uprated 4.2 litre ones.First tensioners were plastic which fell apart,Jaguar changed them later for plastic/metal ones, which fell apart.Percieved wisdom is that any engine with the Nicasil linings that has lasted thus far should be o.k.-it was the high sulphur content in the petrol at the time that caused the wear.Gearboxes I believe are the sealed for life type-they certainly were on the XJ from '97 on.I have also heard that the thermostat tower[plastic again]can get brittle with age and leak, alloy ones are available from the U.S.A.

Most of the later gearboxes are said to be sealed for life but the oil can still be changed anytime you like, just like any other box, just make sure LT ATF goes in.

The S type has very, very light, over assisted steering. It does take quite some getting used to.

Picked it up on Saturday and l'm very pleased with it, lots of car for the money just like the elite. One thing I will be changing is the exhaust, it stifles the sound of the V8 ::) ::)

Mine is a 01 S-Type with 80000 miles and I paid £1000 with 12 months not and 4 months tax. The STR will cost you quite a bit more but I've started saving :)
