My 2.5TD (BMW engine) Automatic June 2000 Facelift, regularly fails to change up from 2nd to 3rd Gear at the usual point (around 25mph?)
When this happens, the only way I can cure it is to take it on a road with a higher speed limit and just let it rev high enough so that it does change.  This is usually accompanied by a bit of a jolt, followed by an 'Automatic Gearbox' failure message.  After this message, I can stop the car, turn it off, wait a few seconds and then start up again and it will be fine - until a few days or weeks later when it does it again.  This is the only way to be certain that the fault is fixed, albeit temporarily.  On the odd occasion when it has seemingly sorted itself out and changed up, without the jolt and the error message, it usually fails again straight away at the next 'up' change.

I have recently bought (for spares) another Omega, the same year etc but it is a 2.5 V6 petrol.

I do not know if this is a gearbox fault, or an electrical fault but is there a component on the V6, that I could exchange to see if it fixes the problem?

Could need the auto fluid changing or the ECU flashing for updated software...

The fluid was changed a couple of years ago and the level is good.
This is an intermittent problem so I cannot understand why software could need updating.

Unlikely software will cure. Check for codes in TCM, if nothing obvious beyond 8-incorrect ratio, consider swapping the gearbox. AR35 is preferable, then chip the slug

Potentially, along with 101 other things, hence ideally needing the TCM codes

Could also be a 2/3 solenoid problem in gearbox

When mine did the same on a previous car i got round problem by taking foot off accelerator, change selector from into N then back to D and the gear changed up to 3 and drive on, worked every time and prevented thump error

Normal advice is to clean/change filter in gearbox and renew fluid, but this is not guaranteed, so while your in there change the solenoid

Sorry for delay in replying but thank you for a very helpful reply.
I will try your tip next time it does it but I do wonder if it could be the solenoid.
I have a spare Omega V6 auto.  Would it be the same solenoid on there as on my TD.

Your tip has worked, so I now have a way of forcing the change from 2nd to 3rd gear.

Does the fact that this method will force the change give a clue as to what the problem definitely is though, to someone who understands what makes the auto box change gear.

One thing I did notice though, is that although this method forces the change of gear, it does not stay 'fixed' as long as it does if the 'Automatic Gearbox Failure' message has been displayed.  Maybe this also gives a clue to an Auto Gearbox specialist.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) (the gearbox ECU) will tell you what is wrong if you plug a capable code reader into the socket under the steering wheel - no need to guess.

If you are near one of the members who have a 'Tech2' they can read the codes for you.

I am not near any member with Tech2 so I bought a £15 module off the internet which talks to a £10 app on my Android mobile phone and can read codes on the engine, gearbox and ABS ECUs.
