Not looked at links, sorry, but guessing this is just the usual sun's cyclic activity at a regular high?

Although as each year passes, we are more reliant on electronics that could potentially fail due to this...   ...but I suspect more damage is done by idiots not using ESD precautions when taking stuff apart?

So dismantling headunits on a boat in deepest darkest winter in Norfolk with a gas fire blazing isn't recommended then

What? The boat?

Sounds like a good anti-static environment to me.

The boat was fine, the problem was the moisture causing the casing to rust all over the very carefully soldered components, together with rubbing on the copper plumbing from the steering gear. This incidentally had current running through it due to the rudder and the wiring being connect by a common earth... ie the river

It used to give quite a jolt from the hub of the wheel if you touched it whilst under way
