Is there fuel in tank?
Could be leak off pipes failing causing air to get into system.

Hi cnj,
I have an 02 2.2 dti estate and had the same problem.
I took the advice of those on here and whilst I have not had the work done yet, The problem has been practically eliminated by following a couple of RIGID rules.
Assume the fuel tank is empty if it is only half full, so fill it right up and when it gets near to half put some more in it. That seems to stop the fuel syphoning back down the pipes and the pumps not man enough to suck it back up again.
Also, before you turn the engine over give the gas pedal a few pumps and HOLD IT DOWN when you do turn it over.
Finally, NEVER park facing uphill, even a very slight slope can affect it, try and park facing down whenever you can.
Look at my first post, it relates to the very same problem and contains all the answers you need, in the meantime follow the above and you may be agreeably surprised.
All the best

many thanks guys for your wise words, it look on the face of it that the non return valve either inline on within the pump is weak and allowing the fuel to run back down the line. does anybody know whether there is a mod for this problem ?

Crack off a pipe to a injector and see if you get fuel out when you crank it over  :)

As I was advised to do on mine, get a priming bulb fitted on the fuel line.

best of luck

After putting another 20 ltrs in the tank, priming and about 2/3,minute s cranking she started, drives a treat the only problem left to resolve is that she will go into limp mode under reasonably heavy load for about 90/120 seconds, joff has advised to check the vacuum pipe connections which I intend to do today. Many thanks again to all for your wisdom !
