Air Con Compressor
« on: 07 October 2014, 22:15:34 »

Looks like the compressor has finally given up, after being somewhat noisy for a few thousand miles.

Searching around there seem to be a few variants at vastly different prices. Does anyone have a reliable source for a compressor for a 2001 3.2 saloon ?? Looks like a new one should be just over £200 ish .. but I might have found cheap and cheerful rather than decent and reliable ....

I thought about a breaker one .. but it'll have probably done a few miles and maybe been sat unused for some while, and still cost £100 odd ... so new seems the better option ???

I have an air con guy who will empty this one then refill after I've changed the compressor for the same price as a normal recharge - he'll also change it for me for another £200 !! but I think I should be able to do that bit myself !! I seem to recall Shackeng changing one fairly recently.

Any advice/opinions/sources/part numbers gratefully accepted :)

MrDTM is the one to ask. He referred me to a place for mine, that I just can't remember where.

As for fitting, not the most difficult job in the world, just awkward, definitely even you could fit one  ;) ;) ;) :y

Just looked through my Paypal & I seem to have bought my compressor from here https://www.atp-autoteile.de/products/id/15830/10481011/list-1-20-2.htm but can't now find it on their page. It was £180 in April 2011

This is the one I bought ...... https://www.atp-autoteile.de/group/514010/product/3861/17584/details.ht

This is, according to their site, for a 3.0 - not for your 3.2 ....... but is there a difference?  :-\ :-\

Awkward job - comes out from underneath and forwards.  You will need long socket extensions to undo top fitting from under bonnet ;)

Probably an extra pair of hands too,as seem to recall when mine was replaced some years ago by A/C guy I use he had a mate holding the compressor from below and also guiding the socket onto the top mounting bolt, which he enbolted from above inside engine bay with several long extension bars .

Best of luck with it as it did look a nasty /ackward job tbh

Even at my advanced age I did not find it difficult, I don't agree with the guide though. I found it easier to remove the compressor with the pipes attached, as they are then easily accessible to disconnect from said unit. You do need some longish extensions. I replaced the condenser at the same time, so the rad was also out which made it easier. I bought mine, AC Delco I think, from CarParts4Less, it was about £150 after the refund on the old one. :y :y :y
