Fault Code P0420 Catalyst Low Bank 1
« on: 13 October 2014, 16:02:47 »

I have an Omega 2.6 V6 Estate 03 plate and I had the above error code come up. Initially the garage changed the sensor but within 6 days I had the management light up again. They then changed the Bank 1 Catalytic Converter again this worked for about a week then the light came up again. The car has gone in twice and they have fitted spacers but on both occasions within days the same error comes up. I am now being told I will probably have to have a Vauxhall Manufactured Cat fitted and they apparently cost an arm and a leg.

Has anybody come across this before and if so what did you do to solve it ?

Many Thanks

Dave

Well documented... the sensors need moving down the exhaust. Can be done for less than the cost of a sensor.

Expect a P0430 code for bank 2 soon as well ::)

Refit the original cat, then add two cans of Wynns injector/fuel treatment to a full tank of Shell V power. Then rag the living daylights out of it, if you get more than 240 miles from this tank, then you aren't trying.

This will clean everything and should turn the light off in the process. Ultimately though, the only cure is to move the sensors :y

If it's only been on a week, try and get a refund for the cat, as there was nothing wrong with the old one :y

That's very very poor diagnosis by the garage and resulting in a big bill for an un-needed cat section which will be of much lower quality than the original. :y

Oh dear, I know its a bit late now, but you now have an inferior, not up to specification cat, and are a few hundred quid lighter, all due to poor diagnosis by your garage  >:(

The solution is to move the sensor...  ...though you may always regret having that pattern cat on there  :'(

I get the 0420 and 0430 at least once a week! I just live with turning it off with my code reader but will move the sensors eventually.

You're not alone - Mrs TB gets it when she uses TBE. I never have, she clearly is driving like tunnie.

Actually, thanks, reminds me I need to find the tech2 (could be anywhere) and reset codes on TBE - the eml wont go out by itself

Funnily enough... It does. Usually after 600ish motorway miles.... Of course, a day after driving on normal roads it's back on!

Had a similar issue with my 3.2 bringing up fault codes running on standard unleaded even though it would only do it when just poddling around town, good motorway run it wouldnt come on.

Just to test I ran a tank of Shell V and despite slow town driving light didn,t come back on.For the past 2.5k miles have used Shell V and whilst it maybe a few pence a litre more ,light has never reappeared so will continue with the more expensive fuel as slight perk of my job is its all tax deductable  ;)

I thought we moved the sensors on that one?

Nah. Just welded in the bosses to the new location. Iirc he later discovered the sensors won't budge. (And is too tight to buy new ones.....or indeed used ones ;D )

You tried. You failed ;D

Given you failed, I didn't even try  :-[.  As Gixer says, needs new sensors...  ...but looking at trims, I think it may possibly need new injectors as well.  Needless to say, no issues when I drive it...
